Can anybody tell me the correct way to time my 39 Huber Model L with a Waukasha engine and a Bosch Magneto? What is the correct firing order? Points and plug gap? Which should be the No. 1 terminal on the magneto? I'm new to Hubers and Bosch magnetos. I got a copy of the manual but it dosn't tell you anything you couldn't figure out from looking at the tractor! It doesn't even mention the engine!

Many of the Waukesha engines have the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley. If there is a notch in the rim, and it's not easy to see, that's it! If it's not there, there will be an opening SOMEWHERE around the flywheel, probably at the top of the bell housing with EITHER an arrow or a cast-in notch.
The engine firing order is going to be either 1342 or 1342---period. You can determine that by cranking the engine with the plugs out and see when each cylinder compresses. You can make ANY magneto terminal #1--just get the firing order right. Point gap on MOST Bosch mags is 1/64th inch or about .015". The mag MUST impulse slightly after top dead center. the flywheel may have 2 marks---one will say SPARK (this is the you do NOT use for installing the mag!!!) and another TDC. THIS is the mark to use for timing purposes. One thing you might want to check out is the lag angle of the magneto. In other words, how many degrees must the impulse coupling turn before it impulses. You'll need a mag with a 30 degree lag. Anything less and the engine will always be running with late spark---nasty! Don't want to get too windy here but it's pretty basic stuff---unless you've never done it before!!! Good luck. Craig

I wired it the way you said, but that wasn't right. It turns out that the actual firing order is 1-2-4-3, not 1-3-4-2. There are 2 sets of marks on my fly wheel, "DC1" and "NC1", what does NC1 mean?

My mistake--typo. I MEANT 1342 OR 1243.
At least you got it. As for the NC1, I don't have a clue! But I'm gonna try and find out!
