I have 2 complete tractors and a parts tractor. My first one was and is blue (and no sign of gray under the blue) with red rear and front wheel discs with silver rear rims. I have a picture of another blue one in South Africa. In talking to people about the different colors I have seen some older people said that Gibson would get an established tractor dealer to sell their tractors (if the dealers line did not have a small tractor) and paint them to match the dealers line. Gibson most likely got their paint from the lowest bidder and there would be no guarantee of each supplier supplying the same exact shade of gray. If I ever get around to painting Gibson #2 it will probably be machinery gray, that seems to match as close as anything I've seen.

Do not paint machinery gray! I had computer scan under greasy spots on original Gibson "D". Closests match is Wisconsin Gray, silver rear rims and a bergandy red for the wheels. I had PPG mix the paint but do not have the paint codes, just the paint cans, sorry thats the best I can come up with without going back to PPG with my paint

I am currently restoring my 1948 Gibson Model D. I found no formula for the gray or red colors. The gray was actually the Wisconsin gray color---according to Dave Baas. Because of the lack of knowledge on this, many Gibsons are different shades of gray. There is a formula for the red, but it is for different models other than the D. Good luck on the restoration.

Hi Mike! David Baas is the man that knows Gibsons in and out without a doubt! He lives in Floyds Knobs, IN. and created the Gibson Tractor Club in 1992. His email address is, dbaas@bluegrass.net
Website is www.bluegrass.net/~dbaas/
Good luck, Dave.
