I have a Warner & Swasey Hopto Digger model 200 SPR-4. 4wd, rubber tires, dual wheels in back, GM diesel 4 cyl. 53 series. Do you know where to get parts? They are obsolete everyone tells me, but there must be extras somewhere. Fred in PA

The correct name is Warner and Swasey. That information is necessary if doing an internet search. If there is a model number on the engine, posting that might help someone recognize the manufacturer of the engine. Is the oil pump or the water pump on the side of the engine at about the same height as the magneto?

the number on the engine tag is f244 2-460 6459
and the water pump is above the magneto, at the top of the block. Thanks for any info

Would you have any information?

The correct name is no doubt Warner & Swasey. They manufactured a very well known excavator starting in the 1940's called a Gradall, which had a hydraulic extendable boom shovel on a rotary table. There were versions mounted on both rubber tires and tractor treads, in several different size ranges. These were very popular as ditch construction and maintenance machines, as well as general road construction implements. Most were self-propelled, self-contained large machines that could be driven significant distances from a road maintenance/construction facility to wherever needed in the field.

I am not as familiar with some of the other heavy equipment products in the line, which may be the tractor/implement you have inquired about.

The main plant making the Gradall was in New Philadephia, Ohio. Not sure about all the other products made by this company. They also made some excellent machine tools and various industrial products. Warner & Swasey turret lathes were considered among the best in the world. I believe they still make Gradalls and various high-lift bucket trucks and forklifts, etc.

My father was a master machinist for the company for about 15 years. At one time he operated the largest turret lathe in the world. I know they had very close machine tolerances and used good materials for the Gradalls, at least in the in-house assemblies they manufactured. A far as I know, they made a good, reliable product.

See www.gradall.com/gradall/about/history.html for more info. Hope this helps.
