I HAVE WHAT I WAS TOLD WAS A WARDS TWIN ROW. THE SERIAL # 4A194 SHOWS A 1944 AVERY A. WAS THE WARDS TWIN ROW AN AVERY A OR A CLETRAC GG SOLD AT MONTGOMERY WARDS?? OF COURSE MY TRACTOR LOOKS THE SAME AS MANY EARLY AVERY A AND THE GENERAL GG. IT IS PAINTED AVERY RED. WOULD THE TWIN ROW HAVE ANY IDENTIFYING MARKS?? I ALSO HAVE FOUND SOME ORANGE PAINT UNDER THE AVERY RED ON SOME COMPONENTS??? ANY INFO APPRECIATED!!!

I also own a MW Twin Row. It is tagged with a MW id plate and carries the serial # 1FA5420. The model # is 04CT-193. I have been told this is a '39 model. Mine is and always has been red. It was purchased new by the folks who owned Mom's place. It was left in the shed after cutting timber in 50 or 51. I have managed to get the engine unstuck (high humidity in Va.), the mag and starter and carb rebuilt but the timing still is not right. Too many projects and not enough time. Also in the shed was a FM Z 1-1/2 hp in parts. It's a rust thing, you know

Try the BF Avery website for some information. I just acquired a '39 Twin Row and have been getting some good information from this forum and from the Avery folks. Your Twin Row is the same as a Cletrac General GG, but was always painted Red and should have a Montgomery Ward serial number tag. I also ordered a set of Cletrac General manuals from YTmag.

I just bought a Wards Twin Row also. Mine has a serial number tag on the right side of the transmission housing that identifies it as a Wards Twin Row, manufactured by Cleveland Tractor Company. Judging by the General GG and Avery A serial numbers, mine is a '49 (5FA146).

Tom, All three tractors are one in the same. The difference is when they were built, as to what they should be called. You are in a gray area of time right after Cletrac let this model go to BF Avery. Don't forget there was also a war going on when this transaction took place. Judging from your serial number you have a very early BF Avery model A. I am not sure when they stopped putting the MW Twinrow decals on them, but I thought it was when Cletrac sold to Avery. BF Avery continued to supply Montgomery Wards, so it is possible the Twinrow's remained decaled as such for a while after the sale.

ESEV- I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT. 1943 &44 ARE BORDERLINE YEARS. MAYBE CLETRAC PUT A WARDS TWIN ROW TAG ON THEM WHEN MARKETED THROUGH MONTGOMERY WARDS AND WHEN AVERY BOUGHT THEM, THEY PAINTED IT RED, TOOK THE SAME TRACTOR AND PUT EITHER WARDS TWIN ROW DECALS ON IT OR AVERY DECALS. THAT ALSO EXPLAINS THE ORANGE UNDER THE RED PAINT ON MY TRACTOR.
GLEN- I QUICK CHECK ON YOUR ID # SHOWS IT TO BE A 1939 GENERAL GG. YOURS CAN'T BE A 1949. I HAVE A 1948 MONTGOMERY WARDS CATALOGUE AND THEY WERE SOLD AS AVERY A'S, NOT TWIN ROWS. I THINK THEY DID THIS WHEN THEY CHANGED THE HOOD AND GRILLE ON THE AVERY A'S!!.

Tom, Just curious, does yours appear to have been decaled a Twinrow ? About the orange paint underneath, I have heard many accounts of that on the early A's. I am guessing that a lot of the finished parts that got moved to Louisville during the transaction may have been painted orange. After they were assembled in Louisville they would have gotten a fresh coat of red.

Ok, I fat-fingered the keys, I meant '39. It definitely has the Montgomery Ward tag.
