350 Long clutch again

Ok, got my new clutch and pressure plate installed today, it works but not very well, it grinds going into gear, the clutch set had a paper with the adjustments on it, said to set main clutch finger height to 1-1/2" done that, pto clutch adj. at .030 and done that, slid it together got it running and found the grinding problem, no problem I said just needs a little slack taken out of the pedal, nope, adjusted to no freeplay at all still same problem, ok I said 1-1/2" wasn't enough height on the fingers, after considerable difficulty managed to increase finger height thru the adjustment hole, didn't change the problem at all, I tried slipping the clutch some because the plate had some paint overspray on it, it wasn't much at all I didn't think it would cause a problem or I would have taken it off before assembly and both clutch plates are turned correctly (there not in backwards) the pto clutch works ok with very little grinding.

Once had a simular problem when I replaced the clutch assembly on a 460 many years ago. After taking it apart for the third time to try to figure out what was wrong, it was suggested to disassemble the two stage clutch pressure plate and do some comparisons with the one that was in it to see if there were any difference at all. The inner plate on the of the pressure plate was not machined to the proper inner diameter and when the throwout bearing compressed on the fingers of the clutch this was as far as it went. The PTO was working perfect, but you couldn't get it in gear. Due to the fact that this was a special order part from out of state (even the dealership that sold Long Tractors had any idea what was the problem. I knew the shop foreman and he thought it was BS) we took the plates to a machine shop and they machined it out to the spec's of the old one for comparison. Problem was solved!!!!!

Hope this long winded story will be of some assistance with the dilema you are having with your project.

The first two things that come to mind that I've seen cause this problem are:

(1) Someone used the engine to transmission bolts to 'slide' the tractor together and ended up bending the clutch disc.

(2) The thrust bearing on the engine crankshaft was worn so that the clutch pedal travel was spent sliding the crankshaft forward instead of disengaging the clutch.

I hope you've found the problem by now and it's not one of these.

Seems #1 might be it, or the clutch disc is bent anyway, I blocked the pedal down and thru the adjustment hole I can turn the disc with a screwdriver and see it walking from one side of the pressure plate to the other, I didn't pull it at all till I was sure both shafts had started in the splines. dadgummit and a few other choice words they wont let me post.
