Hi, I am trying to help a friend out. He has a old David Brown 990 and the 3pt hitch doesn't work anymore. He had brain surgery a couple years back and as a result can not do as much as he use to. So I am trying to help him fix his tractor but I do not know much about David Brown's let alone hydraulics. Is there anything I should look at or does anyone have any ideas as to why the hydraulics no longer work on this model tractor? I don't know much about his tractor but if needed I can get any information anyone might need to help us out. Thanks and take care.

In the early 80's prior to joining the military, I was working in a shop and came accross a simular problem. It seems that the owner got a little torqued at the local Case dealer because after the third time in the shop it was doing the same thing. Well, he also just happened to be a friend of the owner of this small independent shop that I was working at and of course the boss said that we could fix it. Well this thing was driving me up the wall. I am taking it that when you say it "doesn't work anymore" that it won't come up at all no matter what you do. There is (I hope I am remembering this correctly)the hydraulic pump on the right side, somewhat under the seat of the tractor behind a side plate that will come off for access. From the hyd pump to the control valve body is a feed tube for the hydraulic fluid to travel through to the controls. Well it has a flange that is soldered on to the tube and has a tendency to slip off/break loose after a few years of use. Pull that control valve body off and remove the piece that secures the feed tube. If the feed tube isn't there, but inside of the rear end of the tractor you have found your problem. Take the tube and flange out of the tractor and braze the flange back onto the tube and re-install the whole assembly. I hope this helps you out in fixing the lift problem on your friend's David Brown. I hope I don't upset anyone, but we used to have another knickname for the "DB" or David Brown Tractor.

try replacing the o-ring & backup ring on the hyd piston. if this doesn't fix your problem, take the valve out and clean the spools.
