Anyone have any experience with the rear brakes on a Deutz 5506? Mine don't work worth a darn. Plenty of pedal, but no stopping. I have pulled the drums and everything was like new. Plenty of lining left and the brakes were adjusted correctly. All the hardware is in very good condition and there is no oil on the lining. Shoe outside radius fits the drum inside radius very well. Is this something inherent in this tractor or do I have hard or glazed lining? Any easy fixes? Can't be too much to go wrong, just a cam and drum and lining. Hand brake works great, but that's a separate brake.

The problem is, the tractors came from the factory with "too hard" of lineing material! Have your shoes relined with softer material, and you will have the problem fixed!

That is what I suspected. Everything looks like new and there is no sign of oil or grease on the lining that I can see. Thanks for the advice.

Are they Hydraulic or manual brakes? If they are hydraulic, check to make sure the wheel cylinder is not set up and then make sure you bleed them properly. Also, adjustment is critical, you should tighten the adjusters so there is a slight drag when you spin the wheel. If they are manual, I have no idea.
Good luck,
Kurt

The shoes must have been saturated in oil. You can clean them with anything known to man, then boil them in detergent for two days, and they will never hold again. I have been there and tried. goof
