I think that was the name. I was told they were made in Janesville, WI in the late teens early 20's? Any info appreciated.

Thanks,

JonWI

This tractor had a 2 cylinder engine and used what looked like the boiler from a steam engine to do the cooling.I believe the Lacross boiler co made the boiler parts. They continued makeing a very similar tractor after Townsend stopped.I think many years later allis bought the factory and made new style tractors there.

Townsends WERE built in Janesville but the company eventually sold out to LaCrosse Boiler Works who continued to build the "boiler frame" tractors culminating in a more conventional 12-20 in the 30's. There are pics of a Townsend 25-50 tractor AND a 20hp Townsend engine power unit at the link. 2 cylinders and even-firing like a Titan except with atmospheric intake valves. Neat sounding tractor---as both exhaust pipes are the same length they have a steady beat like a steam engine. So they not only look like steam tractors but sound like them too. Craig
