I just bought a tractor a little Smaller than a
Farmall Cub.It is factory made not home built. It
uses alot of late '40's Ford passenger car parts.
The rear axle is narrowed and uses Ford brakes.
The transmission is a 3 speed column shift. It had
some kind of air cooled engine [thats missing].
It has no tags or names on it. HELP,what do I have?

It is possible that the tractor is homemade or some type of kit. Also keep in mind that during a ten to twelve year period after WWII many small companies went into buisness producing garden tractors or "truck patch tractors". These were all generally single cylinder, air cooled tractors in the 700 to 1000 pound range. Most of these companies never made it even though a lot of the designs were quite good. I can think of names like Shaw, Tiger, Ottawa, Garden Mast'r, Gibson, etc. A few like Economy, Speedex, and, Pond(Wheel Horse) were able to ride it out and continue into the present day. Many, if not most of these, used a lot of surplus or even junk car parts. This was an economical and effective way to build a drivetrain without costly and time consumming engineering and developement. Many of these companies ran short on drivetrain parts or suffered from poor marketing strategies. There are probably brands no one even remembers that were made in this fashion. I realize this doesn't help identify your tractor, but maybe it gives some insight into the possibilities. If you could provide some photos, it might be more easily identified. My father and I own two of the Pond tractors. These were made with a '37 Ford truck rear and brakes, enclosed Ford driveshaft and also a Ford three speed tranny. These used a Wisconsin AEN engine, 8-16 rear tires, 4-12 front tires and '48 to '55 models had a unique fiberglass hood. The Pond tractors were produced from 1947 to 1955.

Sounds like you have some sort of wheat sowing tractor
user to pull drill between corn rows.

With respect to your opinion, I would still have to say it is probably home built. Many home builders are quite good and make something look factory made.

Keep in mind that there was also a lot of aftermarket kits sold to build Ford model "Ts" into tractors. Even Sears & Roebuck offered one. I dont ever recall seeing kits for 40s however. Steve T
