Larry, I also have a Hercules ZXB we found in my father in laws old home made truck from the 40's
My motor has a I.D. Metal Plate with eng. that says Hercules engine Co.and has Eng #317226 on it.
The 2 5/8 x 3 means piston cylinder width & depth,
but another number stamped by the water pump outlet is a six digit # also starting with 111XXX
I have tried to date my motor too. my fater in law say's it may have come out of an old generator or industrial farm or military equipment of some sort, does yours Have a Marvin Schebler carb with model# starting with TCX instead of TSX, I think theese carbs are really old and rare. we pulled the head off to have it bathed at the machine shop for rust problem. when we removed the head there was a number (4) metal stamped right in front of piston cylinder One, I don't know what that number means either. if you have any luck dating your motor, please let me know your resource.

Hello, Thanks for your response. Any additional info would be appreciated. Mario, my engine does not have the original carb as I replaced it many years ago and I don't know where it went. I want to say it was a Tilloston, but it has been too long ago for my short memory. CP

The V tractors did have the tillison carbs.Parts can be hard to find so they often get changed to a popular carb.I have seen 5 or six of the V tractors but only one was in running condition.

Well, I can remember when this one was running, but then it set up too long. Hasn't run in several years now. Engine locked up. Maybe someday I will get time to do something with it. CP

Well that engine would be in the model V tractor. You could try to look up the tractor serial number. Some of the small herks had a casting date and other numbers cast just above the oil pan on the right hand side.
