My father owned a Long model A tractor which he bought new in the mid forties. It was a row crop, tricycle style, with two 15" wheels in the front and 11" x 38" in the rear. The engine was a four cylinder " Intercontinental" with a four speed transmission which was the same as a Cockshutt 30. I think it was made in Pennsylvania. I would like to get a photo of one like it. It was the tractor I learned to drive on.

I've seen them go from $500 not running on up and restored ones from $3,500 to $4,500, some have probably gone higher. There was one on e-bay within the past year that never got its starting bid of $800.

Hey Allan;

I'm really not sure. I have seen a few up for auction but never any auction results posted. We bought an unrestored but running model A that also came with a parts tractor. By "we", I mean "the company I work for, Long Agribusiness", which is the same company that made the tractor originally. I never found out what we ended up paying for it. It all depends on condition, whether it's running or not, how complete it is (does it have the original headlights and hydraulic system which was optional), and if there are any options with it like the hydraulics, wheel weights, headlights, any mounted attachments like plows or cultivators.

I think a basic tractor that was mostly complete and running would bring about $1500-2500 unrestored. This largely due to rarity, but there isn't a lot of demand for them other than collectors. Could you post your serial number please or add it to the registry (under "research and info column on the left).

Hello All;

We discovered an original Long Model A in our archives. I know Brenda has one, but I went and had our printing service reproduce the manual as closely as they could. We had 10 copies made plus the original. 4 are already accounted for here in the company but a man just got done restoring one and called our office looking for a manual and we sold him one of the reproductions. What I'm getting at is that if you would like a reproduction owners manual, call the office and we might go and have some more made. I think cost was around $30 but i'm not sure if they marked it up or not. Just thought some of you might like to know.

Hey There (Hey Brenda!);

Brenda is correct. I actually work for Long and I am restoring one for the company (#20) along with a parts tractor (#299), one of the Long family members has what is alledgedly serial number 4 and a guy down the road has two more. All in all, that makes 4 1/2 in Tarboro. I found a link to an auction for an antique tractor and truck museum that went under and I was amazed at how many tractors used the same Timken rear end as the Long Model A. Farmmaster, Intercontinental, Sheppard Diesel, Simpson Jumbo, just to name a few. Not to mention the Co-op and Cockshutts out there. Funny how all but the Cockshutts went under after a year or so.....

If you know of any that are parts tractors, i'm desperately searching for a pair of headlights to finish out the restoration! Thanks and hope this helps. OH, the parts tractor we have is serial number 299 and the guy down the road has one that is in the 450's or so, so just under 500 were made is a better estimate. Still, that's not a lot of tractors!

email me if you want to talk about these neat machines!

Long Model A tractors were built in 1948 and 1949 by the Long Mfg. Co. of Tarboro, North Carolina who are still in business today. There weren't many made - maybe about 300 or so. Most were tricycle style but a few had wide front ends. There is a picture on this site, click on "Tractor Photos" at the left and search for "Long A YT". It should come up. They have a 4 cyl. Continental engine which was used in a lot of different things - Cockshutt, Intercontinental, corn pickers, power units - you name it. e-mail me and I'll send you a picture of our A - it's not restored but runs good.

Hey Brenda;

If you go to the "Research and Info" link on the left of this page, there's a "Tractor Registry" link. At the bottom of that page is "More..." and if you click there and scroll down to the bottom, Long will come up. I just started a list for the Model A's if you want to add yours to it. This way, several people will have access to some form of registry in a centralized location.

Also, I called John Tichenor again and hopefully he will be able to fax me a copy of his serial number registry as I have some numbers to add to it. This is really fun!
