I"m looking at a Long 460 tractor. Who made the engines in these tractors? It has around 2500hours and will be auctioned. I already figure I can"t give much for it but are they worth owning? Are parts readily available? Is this 460 model any good, dependable?

The 460 was built in Romania and is a Fiat design. I like my 1977 360, bought new. If the tractor runs well and everything works, any price $4500 and under is good. If the original starter fails, Bosch makes a much better one that will fit.

I have been using Longs for over 20 years. In our family, we have had a 360, two 445s, and a 610. They have fiat engines and have been pretty dependable. They do not have a high resale value compared to others. The hydraulic system is only satisfactory. It was common on ours for the front engine seal to have a small leak even when new. These leaks have not gotten any worse over the years that they have been used. You will also have small leak from time to time from the fuel and hydraulic systems. Yes I would buy another one. I would like to have a 4wd with a loader. the oldest one, a 445(same as 460), probably has over 4000 hrs, on it. The tach works intermittently.

Thanks Jim. I had no idea the Longs had Fiat engines in them. I have a good friend who used to have a Hesston dealership and he runs a Hesston 780 and a Hesston 100-90. Those are some of the best engines I"ve ever seen!!! He had a fellow bring in a 100-90 one time with just over 8000 hours showing (no bull) that cranked as quick as it did when new. This friend says the 4 cyl in his 780 and the 6 in the 100-90 were essentially the same engine, one just had 2 more cylinders. He said almost all Hesstons with Fiat engines used 1 of only 2 pistons sizes. He has had VERY good luck with the Fiat engines. Funny you have leaks with yours though. Both his Fiats have lots of hours and they are tight and clean as a whistle...Wonder if the Fiats used in the Longs were some other series Fiat engine or something? This is interesting. I appreciate the Fiat engine after baling hay on these Hesstons for several years. I think they make as good an engine as Deere and from the Deeres I"ve been around, that"s saying something.

FIAT ENGINE in reply to fixitforfree, 02-08-2005 16:52:41
We have some Fiat engine information that goes
along with your message. The 780 tractor has a 4 cylinder water cooled Fiat engine powered by diesel with 103 mm / 4.0550 inch piston / cylinder liner bore.
The 100.90 tractor has a 6 cylinder water cooled
Fiat engine powered by diesel with a 100 mm /
3.9400 inch piston / cylinder liner bore. This family of engines also includes a 3 cylinder
and a 5 cylinder. In our opinion, with several
years of rebuilding and selling parts for these
engines, it is one of the best Fiat engines and it is available in different versions for Agricultural, construction, industrial, and marine applications. If anyone has any information
or opinions about the Fiat diesel engine we would be interested.
