I obtained an old Sears roto spader model #785 293050 and rebuilt the engine. It ran great for a little while, but then the tines stopped moving. I found the pinion had chewed up the wheel in the lower shaft/tine gear.

Sears does not have any part numbers or manuals available for this. Anyone with an idea of the part numbers for these? Or where I could get a suitable wheel to replace the chewed up one?

It ran great for a little while, chewing up pretty thick mud and clay before it died. I hate to trash it.

I have an old Sears roto spader, but the model # is 785 293020 not 50 does any one have any idea what hours power it is? I am working on my school work. I need this information to do the analysis. Thanks. If I see any tiller like yours and it is not useable. i will remove the driven gear if I not miss understanding (you call it wheel) and mail to you.

I have nearly the same tiller, model 785.293060, and had a similar problem earlier this year. What happened on mine is the tapered pin holding the worm wheel to the tine shaft somehow split in two and fell out, then jammed between the worm gear and worm wheel. The transmission seized and a few teeth of the worm wheel were partially sheared off but I managed to clean up the teeth. I couldn't find a tapered pin but used a spring pin and is working fine, for now. Unfortuantely there are no parts available for these tillers so you either need to find a salvage unit or get parts made.

If you are unsuccessful finding parts and decide to scap the unit let me know.

What is the size of your worm wheel. Mine is about 3.5 inches. Mine is #785 293020. I am trying to figure out the HP of the tiller. Please help if you can.

Thanks Holly

I would estmate the worm wheel was about 4" diameter, but the unit is put back together so can't be sure.

My tiller originally had a 6 HP Lawson engine, and is model 785.293060. I thought the second to the last digit specified the engine power, but that does not seem to be the case with yours.

I have since replaced the engine but still have the plastic fuel tank from the original engine which I am selling, if anyone is interested.

I"ve got a modle #785 also, it needs parts. The motor is fine but not original. 4hp briggs and stratton I think the original was 3.5. Let me know if you find a source for parts or want this one.

I also have one of these (recently picked up at a yard sale), it seems to be in great condition, but won"t idle. I"m certain the problem is in the carb/governor, but I don"t have any manuals. Anyone have pictures of how it is "supposed" to be hooked up or know of a location for a diagram?

Tnx--RH
