To you guys talking about the other Hough.
I have a Hough Model HM Payloader. Straight six Hercules, Autolite distributor, Pierce governor, Zenith carb. Machine is rear steer with the front axle being able to shift in and out of 4-wheel drive.
Now what I don't know..... Is this loader 12 or 24 volt? positive or negative ground? What is the firing order? I do not know what the engine is. All I've found on the block is.....below and to the right of the oil filter can G124 centered below that is R Near the bell housing but still on the block X44 558E MolyIron8 CWC

I've been told it's probably a JX. Can't confirm it though. Machine is in great shape just need to find a carb for it(and some manuals would be nice). The carb that came with it was rebuilt but still dumps the gas on the ground.

Any help I'd appreciate it.

We had one of these for years. Cleared parking lots in northern NY with it from the time I was big enough to steer it, about 12, till it was sold when I was 27. My Dad replaced the Herc with an IH school bus engine , but otherwise it was like yours. Used to load out of a sand pit with it too. A couple days after I started doing that and greasing things while waiting for the next truck everything loosened up and she really started working well. I know none of this helps you, but I had to recall that great old machine. Wish I still had it. I remember standing on the brakes for all I was worth, hopeing I'd stop before I hit a car in a paking lot, and all the piles of snow it pushed. Dad even built a cab on it that lasted a few years. No heat, but at lest the wind only got yoou from one direction. Have fun with it.

Let us do one thing at a time. On the 12 or 24 volt. does it have a generator or an alternator. If a generator, does it have a regulator. If a delco it will tell you what the voltage is. If an alternator get the model number and the manufacture and get back with me. On the hercules, le me look at a couple other JX engines. You know the third letter designates the bore size. They also made some with stroker cranks. On your carburetor if it dumps gas the needle valve is not seating. You need to check that I sure would not buy a new carburetor. In 16 years for an implement dealer we sold one new carburetor. Reason it was in warrenty and the company was pretty sure it had a defective casting. Standard firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 on 99% of all six cylinder in line engines. Lets start there.

Thanks for the input. It has a generator with a Echlin regulator which a NAPA buddy confirmed is 12 volt. With that from the way it was wired means it's negative ground.
The firing order matched also.
Now I just have to get that carb working. When I got the machine a few weeks ago the carb was not on the machine so I mounted it. What throws me off is it has two butterflies for the throttle. Top one going to the governor. the bottom hooked to a spring. One rod comes back with a clevis from the cab. Best I can figure is it connects the top and bottom using a pin. Sound right?
After checking what you gave me I've got it ready except for the carb.
The reason I questioned 12 or 24 volt is because it rolls over real slow. NAPA buudy told me to check all cable connections and that might solve it. That leaves the carb.

Thanks again, if you have any other insight I'll take it.

Thanks.

i have a hough loader someone over the years realized the machine was better than the motor in it so they cobbled a ford 390 into it i blew a bearing in the transfer case ive almost got it back together but anyways ive got to say its an impressive machine i broke the bucket off it once triing to bounce the engine out of a full size chev van and when my buddy had the car flattener at his auto wreckers they got their big terex loader stuck and i pulled it out with my old hough
