A man named Wes Pittman from Scott City, KS purchased a Heider Rock Island tractor from my dad around 30 years ago. He refurbished it and I believe it sold on his estate sale. This tractor was purchased new by my grandfather and was the first tractor on our 128 year old farm. I was looking for ideas on how to find it.

Klaus: good start; don't be bashful about rechecking same people, they'll be sympathetic, and something might've been remembered since.
Prof'l Auction? Any state etc records req'd of big pieces sold?
Local paper where sale held? Big sale, lots of antique stuff, probably has story, might even mention who bought tractors?
Chamber of Commerce in Haviland can tell you who to contact about the show.
A well known collector is a plus; his sales would draw mostly well-heeled people. When you repost mention once owned by Pittman and shown by him at Haviland show 19-- , giving then color(s)(lots of collectors try to compile as much of the ownership history of their tractors as they can). You've made a good start; don't get discouraged. Once refurbished by a major collector it's almost certainly out there somewhere.

A few years after Mr. Pittman refurbished the tractor, he showed the tractor at an antique show in Haviland, KS. My dad and I were able to go and drive the tractor.(again many years ago) Does anyone have any connection to this annual show?

I'd try and get in touch with the auctioners in the area around Scott City, find out who did the sale, even who clerked it. Somebody should remember that tractor, its not like it was a John Deere B or something common

Klaus: sent two emails, a long and a short. Post here if they didn"t come through.
To anyone else who reads these posts: tractors are not my field, so feel free to comment without worrying about being redundant, you"ll probably cover something I don"t know.

It"s largely a question (unless you"re lucky) of how much time you want to spend; it"s not unlike skip-tracing people. The tractors not trying to hide from you, but on the other hand it leaves less of a trail as it moves around. Will send some questions to ask/things to look for by email. Good luck (you"ll probably need it!!)

A few years back I talked to as many people involved in the auction as I could. No one had any info either from memory or records. To my suprise there were no records left from the auction. It was a few years after the sale, and from what I understand, there were two sales a few years apart due to the quantity of antiques Mr. Pittman owned. I ended my search then and am now trying again. It was my understanding that Wes Pittman was a well known collector and I was hoping some of this may jog a memory. Just need to find the right person.
