I recently purchased a 1944 BF Avery model A with a two speed underdrive auxilliary transmission. This transmission looks to me like a factory option or an aftermarket option. It does not look home made at all. It does not show up as a factory option in any of the Avery or GG parts books that I have looked through. I have spoken with two local experts and they have said that this was an available option, but did not know if it was factory installed or dealer installed. Between the two of them they had only ever seen two not counting mine. I would like to find some literature about these, and possibly a picture or two, so I can fix the shifting linkage on mine (which is missing). Any information or insight would be much appreciated. Thanks, Esev

Mine is torn down and 120 miles away so I can't give a picture. For shifting, mine has a flexible control cable. I believe it's mounted to steering post.

The aux-trans kit that Oliver sold - made by Trasco - used a Ford Model A 3 speed transmission and a custom-made bellhousing. It fits a Cletrac HG, OC3 along with a BF Avery or BF Moline just fine since they all use the Hercules engine and Clark 3-speed transaxle.

The OC4 uses something completely different - OC4 was avialable with either a "slo-lo" aux or a "travel reverser." This setup uses a little split coupling instead of the standad Spicer universal joints like the the stock Averys or Cletrac HGs/OC3s use.

Here are some photos - one of the Trasco, antother of a Cletrac with two of them installed, and also some specs from Oliver for the little two-speed called the "Slo-Lo."

Thanks jdemaris. I wish I could find out more about who supplied the slo-lows for the Averys and what the applications were. Have you ever seen or heard of these on the Averys ? I know the Trasco type set up will also fit, but I have never seen one of those on an Avery or a Moline either, have you ? Thanks again, Esev

The 2 speed box was commom on the cletrac crawlers that were the same as the avery wheel tractor. Oliver offered a retrofit kit that could be installed on older units. So it would be very easy to instal one on an avery a or r wheel tractor. I have instructions for doing it in one of my old oliver books.

I have seen the Trasco multiple speed gear boxes on the HG's and OC-3's. This being only a two speed is a smaller unit than those. I have never seen one like this on the HG's. I think it is more like the ones I have seen on the later OC-4's, only an older version of it. Could you send me copies of your instructions ? Thanks, Esev

No i don't have a scanner. The extra 2 speed was in addition to the normal transmission. It was installed between the clutch and the trans.
