I have been given an engine from a Howard Gem Rotorvator A single Cylinder Side valve about 500/600 cc It's not a J A P engine. The only marks on it are C 314 6212 It has a magneto and an Amal carrburetta It is a runner so I dont want to strip it down. Anybody got any ideas of what Make of engine it could be? thanks Louis

Sounds like you have a Howard Gem series 2 with a dry sump Howard type BJ engine, machine should have a 3 speed box. Prior to this Howards used pretty well anything to keep production running including motorbike engines when producing the wartime Rotohoe Gem. Hope this helps.

Hi Hal Thanks for replying to my request.I Live in England UK, the engine is English. Howard Rotovators were fitted mainly with J A P Engines, the medium size were fitted with Koler engines and the small Bantams fitted with Villiers Two Stroke engines. I Know of a Howard Gem being fitted with a 800 cc Vee Twin none JAP but Ive not seen any single cylinder side valve non JAP fitted. Once again thanks for the reply.Lets hope a Howard Fan read this request. Thanks again Louis
