I am trying to figure out what sort of a tractor my Grandfather had in the early 1950s. My recollection is probably faulty in some parts but I hope someone may read it and recognize the type.

The machine's engine was mounted at the very front, with the starter pulley facing the front. That would have made the crankshaft run parallel to the frame. I do not remember anything about the transmission.

The front wheels were the mains, close behind the engine. These were tall; about three feet. They were very close together, in fact the tractor was unstable and "tipsy" because of this feature.

For some reason I keep thinking there was a large black steering wheel, mounted flat, above and a little to the rear of the front wheels. This is so wierd, however, that I am sure it is wrong.

Mixed in with thoughts of a steering wheel is a recollection of two or three control rods extending back from the engine ending by passing through holes in a spreader between long handle bars, and a thumb operated throttle lever on the right handle bar end. I think this is more apt to be correct.

There was a ratcheting lever somewhere, (above the handle bars?), which controlled the cultivators which the tractor carried, though I cannot remember either the control, or the tools.

Small rear wheels on a trailing truck were attached to a pivot at the rear end of the frame. The rear wheel assembly included a metal bucket seat of the same style as those sported by horse drawn implements and early tractors. This machine was about seven or eight feet long overall, I think, and except for the tires and controls was paris green. Even the engine was green.

Anyone recognize it?

Fred

I have what you describe sitting outside my house. Its a Bolens Ridemaster. The one I have here belongs to my father. I have the manuals here and will try and scan the cover of it and send you the picture if you wish.

I wouldn't bet money on it, but it sounds like a Bolens RideMaster Tractor manufactured in the late 1940's. Your description is accurate as far as I remember.

Thanks for the come-back, Bruce.

It is one of those little things from childhood I have wondered about for a long time.

I remember when it was brought home; Poppy drove it down the streets of our little town, with Dad driving behind to give traffic something big enough to see, and my older brothers riding their bikes in circles around it.

He used it for awhile to tend a garden he planted at our home but it was only a year or two old when it went away. I think it was because it tipped over more than once but cannot recall for sure.

I do remember it was parked beside the barn, and covered with a WW2 surplus military oiled tarp, and Mom was very concerned I would climb on it and hurt myself. I did start to climb on it a few times but each time either Poppy or Mom came to the door of the house and hollered at me to getaway from it. It has bothered me that the tractor may have been sold because of that concern about me getting hurt on it.

Thanks again,
Fred

Yellow wheels sounds right. I am not positive, and that made it soune so much like the John Deere colors it seemed better not to say anything.

Is it possible to get a picture of the machine? Is my recollection of it being easily tipped over correct?

I have heard of Bolens, many years ago. Are they still in business?

Thanks for the response. I have wondered about this for a long time!
