Need to know what model of versatile to get the bellhousing off of to fit on to my 855 engine, I"am running a 15.5" by 2 pull type clutch with 2" input shaft, my 855 either has a SAE type 1 or 2 bellhousing, I need to measure when I get the engine out of the donner truck, I have a extra hood and front frame to lengthen the front to fit the longer engine, would like talk to any one who has done this before, there was a fellow name BOB who had posted info about this before

8.3 cummins are hard to find, not to many used ones around, the newer ones had alot of pump problems and aren't cheap, changed lots of them at work under warrenty, I wan't to keep this as reliable as possible for field work and pushing silage and snow, the 855 also does have a VS pump on her, need to get the throtle shaft set, and run only off of top throtle shaft for construction aplications, were truck runs off of both, top one runs pumps, bottem runs foot throtle

Transmission shaft and clutch? in reply to Ian T in AB, 08-21-2007 22:14:56
I agree with others on using the 3208 for the correct RPM's and power the thing I'm not sure of is getting the flywheel and bell housing size to match the tran. input shaft. Are there different input shafts for that transmission available? Different engine applications take different governor types. Get the correct style of governor for you tractor. For example the cummins truck fuel pump wouldn't be correct as you would need a VS (variable speed) and these can get spendy, just be aware. Engine swaps can be a nightmare, so do your homework first, you'll be glad you did. bjr

I know the 855 300hp is big, but i will have to get her turned down to a lower hp cpl, around 250hp, some one before me swapped in a 504 in to this tractor, i want to get away from the v8, I looked at a 466 and 436 but the fuel pumps for off road applications were discontuned about 5 years after the engines were discontuned, very few parts are avaible to rebuild the pumps, there are 3 international tractors parked in the bush because of that in our area, the 3208 and 6.6 / 7.8 ford engines would work but if a majour problem did occour ther cheaper to exchange then rebuild because not having linners, I was going to rebuild the 504 but previous owner ran it with a leaking injector sleave and antifreeze spun #2 main, if I could get a 3306 or L10 this conversion would probley be easier, but the 855 came along at a reasonible price, with the big bore 855 the engine doesn't have to work as hard, so engine life would be better, if this conglomeration of parts doesn't work I'll have a 855 for sale

Sounds good but too much ? Sureley something like a CAT 3208 or IH 466 or a 6cyl ford would be better , Get you over 200hp and light as possible .

I would seriously consider a 3208 V-8 Cat motor. It is shorter than an 855 so you wouldn't have to lengthen the hood. It turns 2800 rpms and will make 210 hp pretty easy. Can also be picked up for a very reasonable price just about anywhere on the planet. Contrary to most opinions they are a very tough little motor that makes good power and will last a long time if you treat it right. Mine has 4700 hours on it in my white. Leave the 855 for the tractors that were made for them. Good luck.

The CAT 3208, screaming along @ 2800 will be pretty thirsty, compared to a slow-turning in-line Cummins.

Actually Bob the 3208 is pretty conservative on fuel. They are a bit of a miser. Working my white 4-150 hard it will burn about 6.5 gallons per hour at 2800 rpm. Old Versatile 895 I used to use had a real appetite for fuel. Seems like it was over 12 gallons per hour. I think that old girl had an 855 in it. It was a great machine though. Really bad one is my neighbors big old International 4wd with that big 800 cubic inch v-8 engine in it. Thing burns over 15 gallons of fuel per hour! Blew me away when he told me that. He pulls a 30 foot disk with it.

Don't know if I'm the right "BOB", however, I have posted about Versies a few times on here.

The trouble you will run into is the 855 turns almost 1/3 slower than the 118's original V-6 engine, making most of your field speeds too slow.

We had planned for years to put an in-line 6 in our 145, and had planned to eliminate the topshaft in the tranny, to do away with one reduction, to make a 1900-2100 RPM engine more feasable. We were going to turn around the second shaft, using the previously-unused rear-facing PTO spline to connect the driveline from the engine to, and then flip the "third members" in the front and rear axles to correct the tractor going in reverse from the one gearset being eliminated.

THANKFULLY, a DEERE 8630 came into the picture before we did all that work!

Dave Christianson, at Langdon, ND has wrecked out some Versatiles, and repowered some, as well as repowering a few IH 4X4's that had the poor IH V-8 engines.

It might be worth giving him a call. He would probably have some ideas, as well as bellhousings, etc.

His business phone number is (701) 256-5400.
