Hi Tractor Lovers

Anybody out there an expert on magnetos? I replaced the points and condenser on the Wisconsin engine for my trencher and must have wired something wrong. There are three wires: hot from ignition switch, from condenser and from coil. The diagram on p. 34 of the FB mag manual (http://www.wisconsinmotors.com/partc/optsaccess/magnetos.pdf) appears to show all 3 connected to the terminal screw on the breaker arm, but that blows fuses, and it does not seem logical to me that a hot wire should go to the points which are grounded by the plate they mount on. I think this is the way it was wired before I removed it all, but I must be wrong. Any ideas where all 3 wires go?

Thanks

Has someone changed the switch? That mag needs a special switch to ground out the mag when you turn it to off and still power the rest of the trencher when running. There should be NO Power on the wire connected to the post in the picture.

If you have a magneto you don't need an ignition
switch. They're used on a distributor to feed battery voltage to the coil. If you have fed battery voltage to a mag you may have fried the condenser or coil. There's usually a "kill" switch that will ground out the mag during engine shutdown. There's usually a grounding post on the mag as shown in this old Wico that your shutdown wire connects too. Mags will create their own fire when the magnets passes by the coil's mag. Your condenser and the mag's coil wire should be connected at the points. You need to trace the third wire to where it goes. Can you post a picture? Hal

Hi Hal

It really is wonderful that there are folks out there like you who know a lot about this subject and are willing to help folks like me who know so little. Thank you so much for responding and so quickly!

I have a photo, but am not sure how to post a picture with this message – there does not seem to be anyplace showing that command on the reply screen. I can e-mail it directly to you if you want to write me at ryanj450@aol.com or let me know how to post it here.

Thanks

Ryan
