I know this isn't exactly an old classic but this is the only tractor site I use so I'm hopin somebody here can help. A Buddy bought a Belarus Russian made tractor a few years ago, it was a 40hp gas model. With less then 30 hours on it the motor blew. Long story short it ended in the obvious way, nobody would fix it under warranty and he wasn't spendin money to replace the engine in a brand new tractor. All this tractor was for was for movin hay around. So now the tractor has sat for a few years and he's finally not mad enough about it that he's lookin at puttin it back together. I'm a 6bt Cummins fanatic and and on staff at a few Diesel sites so I'm tryin to talk him into droppin one of these smaller 4 cylinder cummins engines into this tractor and fix it right this time. I'm lookin for any help I can get in figirung out what will be needed to do this. In specific adapter plates to mount up to the tranny and any hydraulic issues that this might have involve. We can fabricate mounts and anything along those lines that will be needed.

Thanks

Go to Yahoo groups and click on Detroit Deisel site. There is a fella on there, named Marty Sax that has fit many odd engines into Massey"s mostly. He makes the adapter plates and many items to do the swaps. He might give you ideas on how to start that. Hope the "Marty" on here isn"t same fella?

Does this mean those Russian tractors are even worse than the Chinese types like Jinmas?? I"ld hate to be the dealer working with these odd imports and have to back them up and fix.

Hello,

Do you still have the Cummins 4BT engine? If so what is the asking price.

Thanks, Sonny Heath

This tractor is a frame rail. He's a got a Cat motor from an irrigation water pump that guys offering him for $500, I just aint that much of a Cat fan myself. Let me be the first to say that my time with them is limited though. They just always seemed to be high dollar on maintenance and complicated little motors. That's what I like about the little Cummins. Cheap and simple.

Is the litle 40hp built with frame rail or is the engine holds together the rear and front end? A Cummins engine needs a frame. Thats the first thing to look at. If someone is creative and has time on his hands, anything is possible.

Now looking at a few pictures of these tractors, I think it would probably be easier to fit a Deutz engine from an old generator or something similar.

Not trying to be sounding smart but,the rest of that tractor is not worth the time and expense of that conversion. Those tractors are sitting everywhere now because they were inferior to begin with.Get what you can out of it for salvage or scrap and be happy. If you could find enough parts to install the Cummin's,it still would be what it is.The little 40 hp gear train won't hold up.He is'nt the only one who got stiffed with these tractors.

About 20 years ago we were testing some Israeli mortars and the engineer was a Russian Jew that left Russia for Israel and we happened to get into
a converstaion on Russian tractors and he said they were junk and not to buy any of them. Looks like he gave out some good advice. Hal

I'm lookin for honest opinions here as well as info so feel free to give either. He knows there junk. He also got a 100hp 4WD drive version that he uses as his everyday tractor. It's a strong runnin tractor but there's not a day goes by that he's not havin to fix somethin on it. He's adapted parts from here and there to keep it runnin. He adapted a Peterbuilt voltage regulator to charge the batteries the other day. He had to modify it somehow but it was over my head.
