Sheppard never Nebraska tested their tractors because they lacked in power compared to their competitors. They just called them "3 plow tractors,SD-3" or "4 plow tractors,SD-4" and we all know how vague that is.They wanted to compete with Deere on their 70-720 diesel and wanted to rate their SD-4 at the same hp(60).They submitted an SD-4 to Nebraska for certification, and it would not make 60hp no matter how much tweaking they did.Old man Sheppard withdrew it and never retested.I have owned many Sheppards and they are not powerhouses. My SD-4 is a western standard and does not have a pto or belt and I have never dynoed it.I have seen a friends SD-4 on a dyno and it was in the high 50's.I did dyno an SD-3 a long time ago and it struggled at 30 if I remember right. One of their problems was their old technology which was High compression(22.5 to 1)and very low injection pressures.Diesel power now adays is the opposite, lower compression and ultra high injection pressures. They will lug ok as they have very heavy flywheels.

The SD3 had belt/PTO hp of 32. I think the SD4
was in the 40 to 45 hp range but not sure.
