Hello everyone I need some help with a Ford 3600 gasser that has started to smoke black sooty type smoke. I bought the tractor a couple of years ago and it would smoke a little bit upon start up but now there is visible smoke even while running. This is the black sooty type that is covering the lift arm near the muffler with black soot. I replaced the plugs in the tractor this spring because it was running rough and this cured the problem. I did notice that one of the plugs was fouled out and was covered with carbon. What is causing this and what is the remedy? I'm not sure of the exact hours because the Hr meter is not working but this is not a low hour tractor, I'm sure of that. Am I looking at a complete rebuild or something more simple? Thanks for your help.

Thank you to all who responded the problem was corrected with the help of someone on here. It turned out that the clasp holding the choke cable loosened causing the choke to stick closed. When I re adjusted the cable to spec the problem disappeared. Again thank you to all who responded.

first thing I would do is a complete elec. tune up points condencer cap rotor and wires then pull the air hose off the carb. make sure it is clean around there. and run the tractor get it warm and see if smokes. you might have to run it a while to clean it out, if you had a dyno it would be great. if it still smokes look at the carb. when it is at idle if you see alot of gas or gas is running out after you shut off the tractor then you have carb trouble. I not sure if a 3600 has a main fuel jet srew if so it should be at the bottom try srewing it in untill the motor changes at about 1/4 throttle then back it out one turn. if you hear any popping noise from the carb or muffler or you have a lot of blow by then I would look into a rebuild or head job.
Good luck Ed

Could be something as simple as a dirty air filter or the choke not adjusted properly. What you"re describing sounds like not enough air and/or too much fuel. While you"re at it why not do a thorough checkup/tuneup including valve adjust and thermostat check?
