A while back there was a fellow asking about Belarus tractors. He got some sincere answers, some tongue in cheek, and maybe a couple mean ones. You had posted a reply with your opinion.
I see below you own a couple Longs. I have two questions:

How does a Long compare with 'name brand' domestic tractors you have owned?

Would you buy another?

Thanks for the input, there's a Long dealer nearby and I'm starting to see Longs around.

Kevin-
As I check the postings here at YTM, I see that sometimes it saddening to see what some of the guys here on my end have posted as if from Burrhead.
But in answer to the Long question. I have not found a tractor that is actually a domestic made unit.
I will attempt to answer to the best I know how. We have a little over 6000 acres between the 3 farms, and so far Ford/New Holland has proven to be the most consistant in warranty and customer support. However I feel the Ford folks have fallen down in product quality in the mid size tractor. However they do furnish loaners when needed.
Massey has proven to be the best all around product wise, but no follow thru on warranty or customer support.
Case/IH to me is an unfunny joke. Product and warranty.
The biggest joke here though has been the big green. Nothing is covered by warranty and the reps are beligerent, arrogant, and sometimes down right rude.
The Long was one of the worst mistakes I personally have made.
I think my 4yo grand baby has more savey than the Long techs who have attempted to service our equipment. The tractors and repair parts are made in Romania, so therefore on any breakdown we have it takes from 2 to 12 weeks to get parts, and that's without and embargo.
If a Senator or rep is peed off it could take a lot longer.
I use the 1 running Long we have strictly to pull a trailer now, it only has to work when we clean fences or the likes to haul brush and trash.
The best buy for our utility size tractors has been a Tafe, it is a generic Massey. The 43pto hp model is $8100 delivered from Beaumont,Tex. Power steering, wet brakes, bostrum seat and my favorite...a Perkins diesel engine with Bosch inline injector pump. Basically it is a Massey in another color at thousands of $ less..
There has only been 1 thing to break and that was a hydraulic line that a limb hit, on 2500 hrs that aint all that bad. Not even a light bulb has shot. Mahindra is my second choice, but they are too high for and off brand.
The Belarus we had was even worse to keep going than the Longs.
I realize this has been an awfully long reply, but no sir I wouldn't have another Long at any price. I also wouildn't take a Belarus in on a bad debt. Happy huntin and good luck padner. Burrhead

Thanks for the info, when I said 'domestic' I guess I should have said 'name brand'. Interesting about the Tafes, I've seen pictures of them but know of no dealer in PA.

As for the posts using your name, I suspected someone was using yours in vain.

Hey Burrhead, Was that a new Tafe for $8100? Around here they are getting $10,000 for the Tafe 35 D. A friend of mine bought one two years ago. He says the only thing he doesn't like is too much speed change from low range high gear to high range low gear. I was just curious if they are cheaper in Texas. Thanks, Nathan(GA)

Sorry about not answering sooner, I was out of town.
The Tafe DI45 was the one that was 8100 it's about 8-10 hp bigger than the 35.
I priced some in Alabama last month, and in Texas they are about $3500 cheaper. I could buy the DI45 with a frontloader put on with a front hydraulic pump, and all out the door for about the same price for it as what they wanted for just a naked tractor in Ala.
So far so good on this one, the gear ratio hasn't been a problem on this one.
We use it to run a 15' finish mower and a 15' batwing bushhog.
Plus there is no sales tax on tractors in Texas so I saved another 8 1/4%.

Burrhead, Sounds like I need to make a trip to Texas. They are getting 10,000 for the 35 here in GA. I can't remember, but I don't think that included power steering.

I called over to check the prices now on the Tafe. The 35 has gone up to $9500 with power steering and the 45 is gone up to $10,900 with powersteering.
They must have had a good season for sales.
You can probably Jew them down 1000 or more on them. They might come down more than that. We didn't give their asking price by a good bit.
If you're interested the mans name is John Morgan at 409-866-3360.
I don't know if you have to pay sales tax where you are, but you don't pay taxes in Texas for ag equip, if you sign the form that it is for farm use.

Thanks Burrhead, I don't farm for a living, but I think the same applies here for the taxes. I know some dealers don't care as long as you sign the form. It does't even have to be your name. But I didn't say that if anybody asks.

Yeah we just play hushup on taxes around here.
The only thing we have to pay taxes on are car parts, and car & truck tires.
I nearly forgot we pay tax on dog feed no matter if it is a cow dog, but we don't have to pay tax on cat food cause they are suppose to keep out pest, and I thought that was the dog's job.
Good luck neighbor I'll see ya next time.

Just as I got through with the other posting here this morning the operator of the Long came in to report the tranny was going out.
We went to check it out, and sure enough 3rd gear is gone. I took the top off to look in, and the tranny looks like a scrap pile.
I used it yesterday and it was fine. This Long has 2487 hours total on it, and this was a laid back easy going man driving it.
I will figure someway to make a power unit from the engine for an irrigation pump. The engine has always seemed to be the best part of the tractor.
