I believe the Long 5 N 1 is a British Leyland tractor. The Loader Backhoe and Crane part was built in Tarboro, NC. Long has since discontinued this machine and there is few parts available. I think the Leyland 282 or 285 chasis was used that had a 38TD engine. It would not surprise me if this was a fore runner of the JCB

Long tractors are made in East Europe, India, and South Korea. They are brought into the country through South Carolina. Their web site is www.longagri.com.

Sorry to disagree with you, but Long tractors are built in Romania and are assembled and distributed by Long Agriculture of Tarboro, North Carolina. I have a 445 Long w/ a front loader and have been quite pleased with its performance.

There is a Long 5-N-1 for sale in my area that I am looking at, but I admit I know nothing substantial about these machines. Overall it is in very nice shape, runs good and the hydraulics seem good, but there is a major catch, it won't move. The owner says that he was told by a mechanic that the ring and/or pinion gear(s) are broken. My main question is, is there a shear coupling on this machine that may have failed? I haven't seen a broken ring/pinion on an industrial machine ever, but I freely admit it's possible. Does anybody know if there is a shear coupling, and the best way to tell if it's a coupling or the ring/pinion? It's my understanding from reading other posts that the machine is made in England by Leyland, as well as the engine by BMC. I would also need to know if parts like the ring/pinion are even available
Any help or information is much appreciated.
