Hi. I was wondering if any of you enthusiasts may know if a nuffield 4/25 that my friend has is rare as it is a petrol one & not diesel. he has been told by someone that these were made for export to America & that there were only about 50 sold in England. Also has anyone any idea of its value. Thanks. Ron.

THE NUFFIELD 9/16,4/25 AND LEYLAND 154 ARE BASICALLY THE SAME TRACTORS. THE 9/16 WAS PRODUCED FIRST. THIS TRACTOR HAD A 4 CYL 948CC DIESEL ENGINE OR PETROL ENGINE (VERY RARE). THE ENGINE WAS BASED ON THE A SERIES BMC MINI ENGINE. THE NUFFIELD 4/25 IS A BIGGER ENGINED 9/16 WHICH WAS INTRODUCED DUE TO THE LOW POWER (16 HP) OF THE 9/16. WHEN NUFFIELD, BMC, AUSTIN, MORRIS ETC MERGED TO FORM LEYLAND THE 9/16 AND 4/25 WERE RENUMBERED 154 AND THE SMALL ENGINE (9/16) WAS DROPPED. THE TRACTOR WAS QUITE INNOVATIVE FOR ITS TIME HAVING A DIFF LOCK AND LIVE HYDRAULICS. I AM AT PRESENT RESTORING A 9/16 WHICH HAS A LOADER AND I HAVE LOCATED A GENUINE CAB FOR THE TRACTOR WHICH SHOULD COME IN HANDY IN THIS COUNTRY (SCOTLAND). THERE ARE A COUPLE OF SPECIALISTS DEALING WITH THE MINI TRACTORS BUT BY FAR THE BEST IS WYARD SCOTT, GREAT GREEN, COCKFIELD,BURY ST EDMUNDS,ENGLAND. ASK FOR ADRIAN. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 4/25 AND THE 154 IS BASICALLY THE COLOUR. THE 4/25 IS NUFFIELD ORANGE WHEREAS THE 154 IS LEYLAND BLUE. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF TINWORK DIFFERENCES TOO BUT I'VE SEEN BOTH MODELS WITH THE OTHERS TINWORK. I KNOW THAT 9/16 IS DERIVED FROM 9 FORWARD GEARS/16 HORSEPOWER THE 4/25 IS 25 HP BUT I DONT KNOW WHAT THE 4 MEANS. IREALISE IT IS QUITE A WHILE SINCE YOU FIRST ASKED THE QUESTION AND I HOPE I AM NOT BORING YOU. I CAN FIND OUT MORE DETAILS IF YOU WANT THEM. PLEASE DONT HESITATE TO EMAIL ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS AT SIMON@SIMO108.FREESERVE.CO.UK IT WOULD BE NICE TO KNOW HOW YOU GOT ON WITH YOUR RESTORATION AND SOURCED YOUR SPARES. I DONT KNOW WHAT COUNTRY YOU ARE FROM SO I HOPE YOU FIND WYARD SCOTT USEFULL. I HAVE A FEW SPARES LYING AROUND SO LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED ANYTHING. I HOPE ALL THIS INFO IS OF USE TO YOU.

GOOD LUCK SIMON.

I read your follow up on the 4/25. I am from Canada and own a 4/25. I think the 4 stands for 4 cylinders. It is a great little tractor and I have not seen any others, Currently it is my working tractor on my 14 acre property. I pull a blade and a Mott mower with it. I was wondering if you could tell me how to identify the year of it and how many years the 4/25 was made. Thanks!

Hi Ben,

The 4/25 was built in 1968 and 1969. Give us a call if we can answer any other questions

Simon
Enjoyed your E-mail to Yancy Sparks. Have you a reliable source for engine parts? Would Wyard Scott know about 342's? My Nuffield looks to be a 342, not sure of the year.Where would I find a casting code?
Ser#42N21625Z54081 Engine#28T1151D508
It is my understanding that some of the engines were replaced and this may be the situation with mine.Looks to be Original, though. The Engine you described 4/25means it is a 4cyl, I believe. The Engine in this rig is 3cyl, 42 hp, 179 cu. in., 2800 cc, approx 2.8 ltr. It has a Loader, Power-Steering, Live power, Hydraulics, Differential lock.Nuffield Orange. This is a powerful, rugged, dependable great tractor. You sound like you know a whole lot about Nuffields. We use it for many, many jobs around the shop and farm..It is terrific to handle, also. I am having some difficulty finding the correct O-ring for a sleeve I am putting in the block. A straight sleeve, grooves in the block. My USA Supplier is at a loss as to find the correct O-RIng. We do know what does NOT work. Perhaps Mr. Scott could advise? This is rather long, but thanks in advance for any information you can supply-Best of luck with your Nuffield, also-Ours is an Immigrant- A Good European immigrant! Hard working..Paul in Maine

If someone hasn't told you already, Monty Pitts at Anglo-American Service Group in Knoxville, TN has pretty much everything that you would need to build a Nuffield from scratch.
I am currently waiting for him to get back to me with prices on a rebuild kit etc. for my 10/42.

Yancy,
The small Nuffield tractors were not produced in large numbers. They started with the BMC Mini (9/16)in 1965 (December) which had only a 16HP engine. In 1968 the Nuffield range changed and the Mini was re-named to fit in with the other tractors and also had the HP uprated to 25. In 1968 the range was 4/25 (4 cylinder 25 hp), 3/45 (3 cylinder 45hp) and 4/65 (4 cylinder 65hp. All these tractors were designed by Harry Ferguson Research. The range was a total disaster for BMC. The BMC group had been taken over by British Leyland and in 1969/70 another range of tractors appeared. The colour was changed to dark blue and light blue and certain changes made to the larger engine. The tin work was changed and the fuel tank moved on the large tractors. The numbers became 154, 344, 384, and the Nuffield name was dropped in favour of the Leyland one.

regards
Brian
(sorry its a bit long Kim)

Hi folks, sorry I've been a bit lacking in this board for some time so I hope to make amends here.

I by no means know a lot about Nuffields but I can get around the mini tractors no bother.

Check out these sites for online manuals and Leyland/Nuffield info
