I am writing on behalf of my husband who is the owner(a very proud owner)of a Howard Bantam 125cc Rotavator which he wishes to restore, he has always had what I thought was bit of a strange hobby his last project was an old ransom lawnmower but after exploring this web site I realise its not as strange(or boring)as I thought, anyway the reason I am writing is because he was wondering if it is still possible to obtain a manual for it? could we tell how old it is ? where was it made? etc

Any information would be useful and greatly appreciated.

I was recently given what I believe to be a Howard Bulldog Rotavator having owned previously 2 bantams and one bulldog. Can anyone help with some scans of the manual. I am particularly interested in finding out what attachments fit it, such as a plough potato banker etc. This one seems to be OK having had a briggs and straton engine fitted. The recoil is broken and the frame is extremely rusty, but I can sort that out. Many Thanks for your help

Hi Lisa & Howard, and all other who read this follow up.

I have a 1950's "Bantam" with a replacement Briggs & Stratton 3.5 HP engine( 1970's vintage). I found most of what I wanted via Tillerparts.com website. Chester Hudson is the proprietor based in Kent, England. Give him a call. He has many, many parts for old rotavators and cultivators and can "loan" you a "Bantam" manual for a small charge and deposit. I also bought a ridge plough, which has proved most useful on my allotment.

I would be most interested to hear from other trusty Bantam users throughout the World. Any photos or interesting histories posted, would be great. Ironically, like Lisa I have found quite a few rotavator "Anoraks" out there. Keep them blades a turning!!

I have a Howard Bantam that my father bought brand new inthe fifties for field hoeing of fodder beet in England. I have done quite a bit of work on it including replacing the original Villars engine with a Honda. Currently replacing some bearings and oilseals, but other wise it's a trusty old horse.

Oh, and i've got the original manual if any old wants a copy - I could scan to pdf if anyone wants one real bad!

Hi Micheal,

Have been trawling the net for Bantam Rotovator information to restore one I have just aquired. It is an early one with a villiers engines as far as I can tell (I have to restore the serial number plates and polish them up to find out for sure) I spotted your post here and the offer of a pdf manual. Hopefully this is still available and you are still willing to service what appears to have been a very popular request.

If you still have it I will post it up on a website as well.

I've just obtained two Howard Villers Rotovators- one is mint with A Briggs engine on the front, the other is solid,with an original engine, but in need of restoration . Luckily the engine is complete(all bar air filter) and combusting....just!!!
I am using some of my A-level students to help me restore it and would very much like a copy of a manual. Our groundsman has got plenty of Villiers spares, so you might see a list posted up soon; Once I have finished with them>

Dear sir,
I have a Howard Bantam rotovator which has no spark so will not start.I have stripped it down as far as the magneto? to change or clean the points but I can't see how to get the magneto off to get to the points. It's a bit of a cheek from me but would you know where I could find a repair manual for it.

Hi I"m restoring a bantam too. It works fine. Best little worker on the allotment.I"ve stripped it down and apart from some broken bolts and so on am making headway. Need to sand blast off some old orange paint and rust proof. Was orange the standard colour for bantams ? Am now wondering about the proper lubricants and so on. Please could I have a copy of the manual ?

I'm just embarking on the restoration of a Howard Bantam with a Villiers engine. A good friend in the trade has got the engine running and my next challenge is to start on the driving gear.

Dear Michael Summers. I would like a copy of the Howard Bantam manual. My partner purchased one many years ago and gave it to her brother when she emigrated. Long before I met her. Her brother used it for many years but has now moved home and had no further use for it. I am preparing a kitchen garden from a wilderness. He learned about this and offered me the machine. A 400mile round trip to collect it and it has certainly put me through my paces. during the last few days. It works well but could do with new blades, oilseals etc.

i have also just purchased a howard bantam with a villiers engine, i have cleaned the points and have a good spark, does anyone know how to set the timing, the carb was also seized and i have managed to strip and sort this, where can i get spares ie the accelerator cable and maybe a new carb if needed and how much should i pay.

did you find the points? I guess they are behind the flywheel. I am just starting to take a Villiers mark 15 4 stroke ohv engine from a Bantam to pieces. The flywheel nut or screw is badly damaged. is it a left or right hand thread and is there anywhere special to apply a puller to get the flywheel off?

There may be a few other things you can warn me of if you hove stripped and reassembled your Villiers.

Howard was an Australian company that made farm implements and specialized in rotary hoes, he also made a tractor. In the 1930's he set up a separate company in England. I will email you with further information. Bob

My dad has an old Howard rotary hoe. He needs to set the timing, but doesn't know how to do this. It os a 12 hp single cylinder engine. Do you know where he can find out how?

I have just bought an ancient Howard Bantam which I would like to bring back to life so that it can help me..

When I try to start, it springs to life for about 10 cycles and then dies. Fuel ok, carb ok, but I found that the magneto was not clamped firmly to the crank-case.

I found the countersunk clamping screws were loose, and on dismantling, one of the screws was apparently incorrect, it was shorter than the others.

This appears to give atmospheric access to the crankcase via the clamping screw threads. I guess this would prevent the build-up of pressure in the Villiers crankcase and prevent the proper two-stroke action.

I would be most grateful for any setting up and timing information you can give me also advice on how I can obtain a copy of the manual.

The air filter is past recognition and I can see no evidence of a choke, I have been told there was a choke. Have you any information on this?

Do you know how the timing is set?
What should be the magneto contact breaker gap?

The spark plug fitted is a large NGK A6, do you know if this is this correct and what gap should be set?

My home is in Devonshire in England. Are you nearby.

I have a Bantam. I have rebuilt it, after stripping it into each individual part.
20% of the bits needed remaking of which I completed my self.
I use the hoe to dig my garden, The mower to cut approx 2 Acres of hay per year, its a sweet runner.
Photos of other attachments and or manuals for the copying of are what I am looking for.
I could answer some questions but probably not of any use.
I may be able to help with advice.
