Looking for any information on a tractor manufactured by The General Tractor Co. The tractor is a model GG single front wheel with a Hercules Four cylinder engine. The ss# is 672041 and the engine # of 1XA3. I bought the tractor from an gentleman who stated that his wife's father had owned the tractor originally and he said that the tractor was a B.F. Avery, however the serial plate say that it is a General. I am looking for any info., especially the Year model and any history on this tractor co. Thanks

General Tractors are the tired verson of the Cle-trac tractor produced in Cleveland Ohio. I own one as you do. It is a light tractor produced in the 1930's for small farms. There are larger Hercules engines that will also fit from oliver cletracs of the 1940's . Avery bought the tired version in the 1940's I believe. A version was made into the 1950's.

I found a tid bit of onfo in a vintage farm tractor book I have. The first and only cletrac wheel type tractor, the GG or General, was built from 1938 to 1941. The General was a tricycle row - crop machine with a single front wheel. It has a hercules four cylinder engine. The General was sold by bf avery after 1941 and eventually ended up as part of the moline product line. Hope this helps!

Click on the following and then scroll down to find the address and phone number for the B. F. Avery club.

B. F. Avery ties into The Cleveland Tractor Company which made the General. Avery produced a tractor which is pretty much the same tractor. The Cleveland tractor company also made a crawler version of their tractors and Oliver wound up with the crawlers. Look at a picture of an HG or OC3 Oliver crawler and compare it to your tractor. You'll see a definite resemblance. To further complicate matters, Avery tractors were sold by Montgomery Ward as Ward's Twin Rows. Later, Minneapolis Moline bought out Avery. It really gets complicated when you try to sort it all out.
