Ok, so I have a old Howard Gem walk behind rotary hoe. It has a dual tank for petrol and oil.
I gues the smaller tank is for oil - but what sort of oil?

What sort of spark plug should I be using?

What is the starting procedure?

Jon

Hi from Wales U.K.
Interested to read the above regarding Paul and Doug's replies.
I am servicing an old "Gem" with twin tanks and Jap 5 engine. Can anyone date the machine? I would also like to know the correct oil and currently propose using ordinary engine oil.
Re-lack of spark: Have you checked breaker points and condition in rear of Magneto. Any help on my problem would be much appreciated as would a reply to david.jp@btopenworld.com
Thanks
David Perrin

Nice to know there are other people about with an obscure facination for Howard Gem's. I am the owner of 3 machines in various states of repair. The fuel tank is not split for petrol/oil but for petrol in the small tank and TVO (tractor vaporizing oil) in the large tank. You will see that the fuel pipes from the tank are connected just before the carb. You start up on petrol and once the engine is warm, turn off the petrol and turn on the TVO. When hot, it will start on TVO but when cold it needs pure petrol (no TVO contamination). There is a drain tap on the bottom of the carb to drain the TVO out so you can fill the carb with petrol. Hope this is of interest to you.
