Hi Alex, one thing for sure the Smith name carried the Snapper on because Mr. Bill Smith owned Southern Saw Works in East POINT Georgia. My Dad was one of the original eleven employees at that time at Southern Saw when they started building those good old rugged mowers. I have one of the old green snapping turtles in my basement in great condition.

I, too have a snapping turtle lawnmower made by southern sawworks. It is a self-propelled model with a Briggs & Stratton engine, model NP. Serial # on the engine I believe to be 1334724. If anyone has any info on this including appx. worth I would appreciate it.

I received this information from Snapper today..... Here is a brief history of Snapper: Southern Saw Works was founded in 1890 for the manufacture of circular saws used by the lumber industry in the SE United States. This was essentially the sole business of the company for 60 years. By 1949 it was apparent that business was falling and a search for a different product was begun. On June 25, 1950, Southern Saw Works purchased the patents of the "Snappin' Turtle" mowers, then manufactured in Montverde, FL. Production of these mowers began in January, 1951. A total of 3,975 mowers were shipped that year. In 1954 the business had outgrown its location in East Point, Georgia and the company merged with McDonough Foundry & Machine Company (originated in 1946 to make iron castings and textile machinery) and moved to McDonough, GA. The merged company was named McDonough Power Equipment, Inc.

Do you have the rider or the walk-behind? This was the forerunner of todays Snapper lawnmowers. My brother-in-law has one of each (he and his father were both Snapper dealers).

I have a 50's walk behind. Brown Briggs and Stratton, unrestored. Brown Turtle head in excellent condition. Body straight. Logos readable but faded. One tooth missing off front. Inherited it several years ago. Tired of moving it! Don't need to tell you how heavy they are!!! What are they worth? Thought to be complete, but last run in the eary 60's.

There is one in the Regional History Museum in Chickamauga, Georgia. It still has original paint and decals and the cast snapping turtle on the front of the deck.

I just picked up a riding Snappin Turtle mower. It has decals, most original paint, the turtle on the front, and it runs. Info would be appreciated.

You are now the proud owner of one of the toughest and most dependabl lawn mowers ever built. The only ones made like that with problems were the ones with Clinton engines on them, and they could be hard to start and keep running. I also have one that was the first side exit ducts on the right front of the decks. I had the honor of watching the developement of the Snappers from the start bbecause my Dad was one of the original eleven employees of the Snapper Company that began as Southern Saw Works in East Point Georgia .
