BMC 9/16 smoking

Just got my "new" 1968 BMC 9/16 running tonite but it smokes like a chimnee. It probably did not get completely up to running temp due to a leak in the radiator (had to cut my running time short plus the neighbors were giving me "the look"). The tractor has only 422 hours on it and all fluids seemed to be at there proper levels. It had not been run in about 5 years so I did replace the oil, fuel and fuel filter. I have yet to find oil filters for it. Is this normal until it reaches proper running temp or should I be looking closely at some potential problem area? This is my first experience with diesel tractors.

Mine was pretty smoky when I first got it going. There was an article in Vintage Tractor about someone who got one with very low hours from an ice rink where it was apparently nicknamed 'smoky joe'so its probably not uncommon. I recently got some fuel additive for the car (also diesel) which is supposed to clean up the injectors and put some through the tractor and it's improved a great deal. It still sends up a good white cloud when you pull the throttle open but isn't too bad now when it's warmed up. Have you overfilled the oil bath on the aircleaner?
If the smoke is black and sooty you may just be burning out deposits in the silencer or the silencer may be gunged up and choking the engine.Try with the silencer off.
Assumming it's not blue smoke (oil burning) which may indicate an engine problem (have you checked compression?) I'd be inclined to run it a bit when the neighbours out to see if it settles down.
Is it fitted with a Kigass pump for cold starting?
if so shut the tap on the manifold once you have it running as extra fuel may be being sucked into the manifold.
