I just got a dead nuffield 4/65 in a trade deal. Allegedly, the clutch is bad and we broke a tie rod end loading it. Sheetmetal is rough, but saveable. What should I ask for this? It's in SW FL and just doesn't appeal to me. Are parts available? How much LEYLAND parts fit? Would it be worth having as a working tractor?

Carl,
When ever discusions come up about 4/65's I am afraid I disagree with Tom. I have one here and it is the best pulling tractor I have ever seen. It pulls throughout the rev range, right down to 800rpm.
Harry Ferguson Design designed the tractor for BMC. The steering was heavy, the engine leaked oil and the hydraulics were not the easiest to use but once you get used to them they are pretty simple.
My 4/65, still in use, will outwork a similar HP Ford, MF or JD. I work land alongside all these tractors in the same field and others are amazed at what she will do.
I might have got the only good one made or BMC exported all the "dogs" to your side of the pond :)
regards
Brian

Carl: this is the tractor that wrecked Nuffield's reputation around here. Two of the biggest Nuffield dealers in Ontario kept their shops hopping for years redoing the engines in them adding reinforcing webbing between the sleeves. The prior model 10/60 was bulletproof, and once Leyland switched to the 4/98 series engine, they were good as well. The 4/65 and it's immediate descendant the Leyland 384 were stinkers. From the clutch back, I think you've got a common driveline, but I don't know what needed to graft a 4/98 engine on the front. Once the 4/65's got the engine treatment, they worked quite well. Just don't heat them up. Good Luck. Tom
