Peerless 4 Speed Tranny Problem

I have a Peerless 2338 4 speed transmission in my Magnatrac II (1984) with the 18 hp Tecumseh. The machine works in all respects, but upon close examination, I discovered that while turning the drive pulley of the transmission (by hand) there is one click per/rev in each gear (including N). In reverse the clicking is worse (it is actually a double click). Does anyone have an idea what I should be looking for? It will still take some effort to get the tranny out, but I could pull the shifter to take a look if I knew what to look for. Thanks for any help, Greg

While the machine is moving, I thought the noise was coming from the chain drive, but now i'm sure the noise is from the transmission. The new news is the transmission is not a 4 speed like it is supposed to have, but instead someone put in a 3 speed tranny. I found a tag with "MOD 1716, 1287 1243", which I am going to check out. The 3 speed tranny is probably not rated for the torque. So now I'm looking for the right transmission.
