I have a BF Avery model A ever since I have had this tractor it has had problems turning over fast enough to start . I can jump it off of a 12 volt battery and it will whirl fast enough to start. I have had the starter completely rebuilt . New battery, and cables ,new starter button. It is 6 volt , positive ground system.Has any one else ever had this problem ?

Check the switch assembly. If corrosion is built up, problems may occur. You have wires running to coil as well thru the starter switch. I rewired my dad's Avery V system and noticed a coil connected between two contact points. Make sure it has clean contacts and is not broken. Replace all connectors that appear old inside starter button casing. Make sure all wires are corrosion free. Clean all bolt and nut connectors on coil and starter as well. Make sure you are grounding the positive battery cable to a BARE METAL suface. Good ground cannot be achieved on a painted frame surface. Hope this helps. John.

Run your new, large ground wire to a starter mounting bolt. Resistance kills a 6v. system many times faster than a 12v. Alternatly clean the rust off both of the the flanges where the starter bolts up to bellhousing, and clean all ground cable to frame/engine connections. Also star type lockwashers seem to make a better contact on these bolts. Worked for J.D. in late 50's & 60's and we found this to be a good cure for all color machines!!! Gene

Make sure that your battery cables are the big, heavy #1 sized cables (and not the thinner type that you would buy to replace the cables on your 12V automobile). You lose too much amperage with those. In the archives, there are a lot of discussions that have been stored on this point.

my BF A model A has an IXK-3 engine, these engines were made to hand crank so turning speed is nebulous, it is possible your compression is low due to rings OR your vacum (which pulls fuel through the carb is low which could be a valve problem I put a 12 violt battery on mine and it spins and starts quickly
