Here is a strange British tractor that I discovered in an old barn near me.

The name on the hood is "Winget", and one of the tanks on the inside says "Lister". What can you tell me about this thing? If it ran, it would be a very handy thing to have around the farm, as a mower and a light loader (assuming I can find or make a bucket for the front).

Mainly, I'd like to know what anybody knows about these tractors- like were they any good, and worth restoring. I fully expect that parts will be essentially impossible to find. However, I am good at improvising.

I think this may be a diesel. what do you think about this thing? I don't yet know what I'll have to pay- I may be able to haul it away for free, as it is on a preoperty to be demolished and there are many tons of stuff to be removed.

I bet if I fixed this thing up, I'd be the only person at a tractor show with one!

Lyn,

This looks like a Winget series 2 or 3; the earlier series 1 tractors did not have hydraulics. Original livery on the later tractors was usually yellow (like the dumpers) with green wheels, so I imagine this one may have been painted red at some point. Normally powered by a Lister SR1 8BHP air-cooled 552cc single cylinder engine with hand-start. The one in your picture obviously has the optional electric kit on it, so probably has electric start as well. Parts for the SR1 engines are still available.

The front-loader looks original, although the roll-bar is most certainly a later addition.

As regards the pedigree of the tractor - excellent workhorse, poor brakes, damned noisy, if you use the loader then make sure the wheels are as wide as possible, since the vehicle is liable to tipping on uneven ground (less-so than a similar-sized Kubota, I have to say), front king-pins and steering are a weakness, and the wheel-weights at the back put additional strain on the joints between the wheel-plates and the half-shafts, so if you put a transport box or large trailer on the back be careful you don't over-load it and sheer a half shaft.

Gearbox parts are almost impossible to find (I'm looking for a half shaft for mine at the moment)

I am interested in buying the tractor you have advertised for parts. Please contact me and let me know if this is possible. I have one question, what size are the rear tires and wheels? Thank you. Hope to hear from you soon.

John

All I could find out is that they were produced in the early 60s with a Lister diesel engine.

Lyn,
Listers are a good engine. Parts are still avail for the old models.
From what little I can see in the pics that looks vaguely like a Lister D.

Lynn
Winget are a company manufacturing cement mixers and dumper trucks using a Lister engine, both well known companies here in England, I did not know that winget made a small tractor, I will make some enquiries for you
