I have aquired a Samson Digger ser#338. The engine is a flat top 4 cylinder water cooled with CWC on the block, and also F400A421 on the Block. On the aluminum plate it has F162 1123 189473. It has an Autolite starter M7 4046 3L. The engine cover or compartment says Red Seal. Anyone know what I Have here? and if so in what order are the cylinders supposed to fire, and is the first cylinder the one closest to the radiator or the one by the starter? Also I know I will need a water pump. where should I be looking? Thank you for your help, sorry if this is long.

1342 is correct but mine has a magneto on the continental red seal engine. Itis mounted on a 1950 Chevrolet truck and works fine. It is solid rust brown but I plan to nave my girls paint it green because I have 5 gallons of green paint.I have had mine about 6 weeks but it has been around my neighborhood for about 30 years. It is manufactures by Avery Tractor Inc. Route 20 West Lebanon New York. There is no model number but is has serial # 417. Anyone know how old this thing is? It has been repaired several times with some extensive welding but it is ok and works.

Your engine may be a Continental 162 CDI if it is the firing order is 1 3 4 2 . Is it possible the starter could be MZ 4046 instead of M7? I beleive number One cylinder would be the one closest to the radiator.

That is probably the correct starter number with MZ 4046. I have no experience with these old engines. I had a little help yesterday and we got it to try to start with that 1342 order but it acted as if the 2nd cylinder to fire was pushing the wrong way (so to speak). Maybe I should adjust the points I believe I have them opening about 0.200 inches at this time. I am open to any suggestions.

The point gap is .020 so that sounds right, the timing should be set at 9 degrees before top dead center, the timing mark should be on the flywheel but it could also be on the front pully. Spark plug gap is .025. Check the distributor cap for cracks and look inside the cap for any sign of spark trails between the contacts.I got this info from a 50 year old book so it could be there were changes in some newer models. Good luck with it!

i work and live in stephentown ny, next to new labanon ny. just bought a samson digger ser#124 today. the brass tag indicates it was made by avery tractor co. in hancock mass, about 20 mi from the site in new lebanon. possibly this is the original manufacturing site before they moved? as for engine info, just look up info for any old 4 cyl continental flathead eng from a forktruck.i'm a mechanic in a truckshop and trust me, these aren't rocket science.you can call me at albany mack truck @b3 518-781-3190 if you have any info or questions.ask for tim. i'm mounting mine on a 47 wdx300 powerwagon.
