Cletrac General or Avery ???

I just bought a tractor with faded red paint and B F Avery decals on the side. It has a single front wheel and hand brakes, I thought it was probably a B F Avery model A. In checking serial number lists I couldn't find any B F Avery models that even came close.

Looking at the serial number plate it says it was manufactured for Montgomery Ward by the Cleveland Tractor Co. of Cleveland Ohio. The serial number is 1FA1540. By checking serial number lists it should be a 1941 Cletrac General. If it is why was it painted in red and have Avery decals, I thought Avery didn't buy the Cletrac tractor line until 1943 or 1944?

In case it helps it has a Hercules engine, model is IXB-3 and the serial number is 2446226.

Can anyone tell me what I have, what color it should be painted and where I can get parts.

Guess I didn't read your post carefully enough. Yes, that is a strange combination. How about this for an answer. Perhaps the red tractor (made for Montgomery Wards Department Stores) was in the Cletrac inventory when Avery took over. Avery might have got it, repainted the hood (or maybe only the decals) and you've got an instant Avery A. That's about the only thing I can think of. I'm going to email you when I get a few minutes, maybe tomorrow.

Kevin, I would say that you've got a Wards Twin Row. They were of course the Cletrac General GG (or the Avery A later). They were definitely red (easily done at the Cletrac factory or painted over the Cletrac Orange) for sale by the Wards Department Store chain, and I think they had while letters on the hood. There is a picture of one in a shopping mall display at the website below:

That little ~ should be in the upper left corner of your keyboard. My serial number book says that yours was one of a series of tractors that were either the General GG, or Wards Twin Row or Coop (that name seemed to get on everything). This book groups them all together so Cletrac was probably making all of them. And yes, Avery did take the line over in about '42 or '43 depending on who you ask.

Thanks for you information. I can't seem to find any information on the Wards Twin Row. Do you know if Cletrac sold the General or GG model through its own dealerships and through Wards? Or did it use Wards as is dealer or distributor exclusively?

Do you know what the paint code color is for the Cletrac General? How about the color for a Wards Twin Row? Any idea on where I can get parts? I need fenders for sure and the front panels that bolt onto the hood should be replaced.

Based on my research and your information I am going to fix it up as a Cletrac General GG. The General in the link below looks just like mine except mines not restored yet
