Long 610 or U-445?

I stopped by at a local Long dealer today to check out the inventory. They had a pretty decent looking Long, it had a 6 speed transmission, dual hydraulic remotes, power steering and looked to be in good condition in regards to leaks.

It kind of struck me odd that the hood on the tractor showed it to be a Long 610, but the plate on the tranny indicated the model was a U-445, serial number 544205.

The dealer had it priced at $4900, with about 3000 hours on it, and was selling it as a Long 610.

Does this sound like a tractor that has had some newer sheet metal put on it?

Does this sound like a fair price for a fairly clean Long tractor?

The Long 445 has a three cylinder engine and a six speed tranny with one shift lever. The pto is of the live persuasion controlled by the clutch pedal. The 610 has a four cylinder engine and an eight speed tranny with two shift levers. Its pto is of the independent persuasion , its clutch is controlled by a hand lever.

That makes this an even more difficult tractor to figure out. The PTO is run off a lever right on top of the tranny. It is a six speed single shifter unit. It does have a duel clutch, with part way down taking the tractor out of gear, and all the way down being for disengaging the PTO.

what it sounds like is that it is a long 445! I have one and the shifter for your pto is on the tranny it will shift one way or another one is independent and the other is manual I beleive but it has one shifter for the trans. it is 6 speed and 2 reverse but I am pretty sure it is a 445 and if the tractor is in good shape that is not a bad price but the parts are not that cheap on one but what tractor has cheap parts I hope this helps you!!

Thanks Edmond. If it is a 445 it must have had the hood replaced at some point in time.

I asked the guy at the dealer about parts. They sell both Long and CaseIH equipment. The guy I spoke to also works on the equipment. He said parts for the Long are generally cheaper than the CaseIH.

This dealer has been selling Long equipment for as long as anyone. They sell a lot of Longs, and people must be pleased with the service, as they had several used Longs that were taken in on trade for newer models.

The PTO lever on top of the transmission does have 2 engaged positions. One is to the engine when the clutch is released to the first position. The other engagement is "ground speed" and the PTO speed is directly related to the speed at which the wheels are turning. The PTO will then turn only when the tractor is moving. The PTO will also turn backward if the tractor is moving backward.
