Bill,a few different tractors were named Leader through the years, but I would guess you are wanting info about the most popular one. The Leader was built from 1940 to about 1949 in
Ohio. (The grill says made in Chagrin Falls Ohio)
The first units were Chevrolet powered, latter models had a Hercules motor. Not many Leaders were
made and the only remains of one I've seen was in a junkyard. Antique Power magazine (July/August '99) has a good article on Leaders.
(They also have a web-site) Hope this gives you some help!!

Hi. My dad bought a new Leader from a dealer here in Peebles,Oh.1949 I think. A small red 25hp unit.Wide front tires. 3point hitch. Not much engineering. It looked like it had been built in a weld shop. The only casting on it was the radiator shell. "Leader Tractor of Chagrin Falls Oh." I think I still have the owners manual somewhere. I was 18 at he time and worked it a lot. It had a great Hercules engine. I wanted a Ferguson so much. It had a three speed trans. No draft control no muffler. It's a wonder I can hear today. I see a few at the machinery shows here in southern Ohio. One day dad traded it for a Farmall H. Now that was a tractor. My neighbor had an Oliver 88. Wow. I saw an ad for a Love tractor. Can't find anyone who has heard of them. I had my right wrist broken cranking and Allis Chalmers. I know I am windy but I am an old man. Nice talking to ya.

The Leader Tractors were made in Auburn twp.Geauga County Ohio. For one year the grill said "Made In Auburn Ohio" if you find one of these you have a rare one. The Leaders started life in the late 30's as Brockways (the name of the family that built them) the name was changed in the early fourty's because the truck manufacturer objected. The family built Leaders into the late fourtys redesigned it and built it as Brockways up until about 1954. The Brockways still live in the township and show Brockway/Leader tractors every year at the Historical Engine Society power show the last weekend in July in Burton Ohio.

Just had a mechanic install new main bearings, but he said crankshaft was badly worn, and the oil pressure is only 5 lbs; was told that there's a small adjustment bolt for oil press just in front of the dipstick, but mine only has an open hole there; anybody know what's supposed to be in there, and if I just put in a bolt, will it adjust the oil press?

I just acquired a Leader but don't yet know year or model designation. The sn is 97, and the grille reads "MADE IN AUBURN OHIO"; so I surmise it may be an early example. I would be happy to share photos and info, and would like to find implements (located near to NE Ohio).

P.S. I also have a '49 Ford 8N w/ 711 one-arm loader, '39 JD H (no implements yet), and '76 Speedex S-19; will share info & photos.
