I recently bought a 1986 long 510. I put new sleeves, pistons, and bearings in it. The tractor runs fine but is very difficult to start. I have tried to trouble shoot a little but decided to ask if anybody has this problem. I can remember a 4320 John deere tractor my Dad had when I was younger that had to be started on ether no matter what. Does anyone know if a Long is just inherently hard to start?

First off, DON'T USE EITHER IN A LONG. They can't take it. Piston rings will shear if you use either. The 510 should be a easy starter, providing your thermostart is in good working condition. My second question would be, what battery do you have in it? The tractor will need at least a 980 CC amps to spend engine properly. There can be no slowing of engine rpms when cranking over compression stroke.
