how should rusty metal be treated to prevent continued rusting under the new paint ? in heavily rusted items it is not always advisable to grind or sand out all traces of rust . this is especially true in sheet metal . is there a chemical treatment ?..... ...thanks bill b va

I bought 5-gallons of the Evapo-Rust product. I liked the fact that it was non-toxic, and could be disposed of down the sink when the solution is spent.

So far, I've de-rusted a grille, radiator shroud, unfrozen the handle of my tractor crank, and taken the rust off of numerous rusty bolts. I'm happy with it, but you have to be patient while it works.

I only wish I could find a Rubbermaid tub big enough to dip the ENTIRE TRACTOR!

I've got before & after photos of my parts scanned if you want to see how it works.

Hi Olen,

I believe it was your son-in-law that called me at my office when I purchased the Evapo-Rust product. I was having trouble with the Dallas distributor, and he got me taken care of in a hurry. When I mentioned where I'd heard of the product, he said it was probably you who posted the note.

Regards, -Mike

I haven't tried acid. I did use hot tanking on my gas tank, but I would definitely try Evapo-Rust on my next tank. (The results are similar, except hot tanking might remove more paint.)

The product costs around 13.00 a gallon, and I got my 5-gallon jug for about 80.00 with shipping. Seems high, but supposedly each gallon will do 300 lbs. of rusty metal before the solution is spent.

I added up what I had to de-rust and how much elbow grease it would take... and decided that it was worth the cost.

Sorry I don't have a web site or I would post the "before" and "after" photos of the parts I've done with the product.

Good luck!
-Mike

Bill, after blasting or rotary wire brushing I usually use a "rust killer" that consists of Phosphoric Acid. Almost all the metal conditioners & rust killers contain a fair amount of phosphoric acid. The stuff I use is from a place in California called "THE SHOP". I don't have their number handy but if you E-Mail me later I will look it up & send it to you.

I have tried just about every kind of thing you can imagine to do away with rust. Muratic, Phosphuric and Hydrochloric Acid. They will all kill rust but have to be made neutral with Baking Soda and cold water after. To do it the cheap way I bought a toilet bowl cleaner "The Works" from the Dollar Store. Just a little bit will let you wipe surface rust off bare sheet metal and it also has a rust inhibitor in it. I tried it on some new metal and left it outside . It didn't flash rust again for several days. Acid is dangerous to work with . Work Safe !

"The Works" is a hydrochloric acid solution with a rust inhibitor. be careful with it.
