I have not tried it -- The correct paint for 1948 is IH 50. PPG 70019/DuPont 7410. The paint on this site is likely IH 2150 that most people use, but it was not produced until 1961. It will be the old cheap alkyd enamel, which will look good for a while, then it will fade. There was no color code for the rims, as they were originally galvanized. They were never off-white. IH did not use white on any of the sheet metal until the 30/50 series came out in 1956. So, any silver colored paint that you are satisfied with will work. IMO aluminum is too bright. I use PPG 8568, which is a GM rally wheel paint, and is a silver-gray color, a little on the dull side, but it works for me.

hey thanks that helps alot. Where's the best place to get the paint? I'm new at body work, what would be the best route, painting each part then put back together,or paint it as a whole?

PPG, DuPont, Sherwin Williams, etc. It must be mixed. Case-IH sells 2150 (technically the wrong color), it is called an "acrylic modified" alkyd enamel, and has some fade resistance. Otherwise have acrylic enamel mixed, to avoid having to buy $500 worth of protective equipment. Do not buy any premixed paint off the shelf in farm stores, etc, if you want it to last.

The only way to get even, full coverage is to disassemble, many people only paint what they can see.

Expect about a gallon and a quart of both primer and paint from Case-IH on an M. I personally feel IH paint is as good or better than unhardened "economy" acrylic enamel. IH paint has an advantage over unhardened omni as it can be recoated after 3 days if you make a mistake. My IH 806 sits out most of the time that I painted 2 years ago and stil looks and shines as good a the day I painted. A little wax does wonders. The paint job is as good or better than what it came with from the factory(alot of factory runs). However my 806 is a work tractor and not a show tractor, I only aimed to have the quilty similar to what it came with. The paint you choose needs to be based on your skill and intend use of the tractor.

Case-IH 2150 is $35-$40/gal, I have never used any. PPG/DuPont acrylic enamel without hardener is around $80, haven't priced lately. Plan on about a gallon and a half. 4-5 quarts might do if you are extremely conservative. Epoxy primer with non-iso hardener is about $80, you will use less than a gallon. You will need a couple of quarts of surfacer for the sheet metal. You might also need reducer for the topcoat. Or you can use Case-IH 2150 for $40 and their primer, and not have to worry about a perfect finish for under $100. Best thing for you to do is ask someone that sells paint. Paint is getting more expensive because of petroleum and steel prices. $100/gallon for quality "economy" acrylic enamel is not far off.
