I'm looking for a good website on auto/industrial paint history. I've heard they used "varnish paints" from the 1900s to the 1920s and would like to know more about them as well as the early
synthetic/alklyd enamels wich replaced them.

Hi,

Try Ditzler, PPG, and Generic. There's also some paint chemistry historical information from DuPont here. I doubt that any of it is as detailed as you want, it being fairly general in nature, but it's something.
