Questions about stripping paint

I have my tractor torn down, and getting ready to strip it using lye gravy. My question is, what is the best way to protect the bare metal from flash rust after it is stripped? If I use phosphoric acid, can I just paint over it, or will I have to sand it first? Sanding would be nearly impossible on the main case because of the uneven surfaces. Any advice on this is greatly appreciated. I have just about everything thought out except for this. I'm stumped. Thanks, Jdman

I would use phosphoric acid in just such a case, and I then I would use a red Scotch-Brite pad to scuff it smooth prior to primer. I use the Scotch-Brite on flat sheet metal as well. I think you'll find that it will be plenty smooth.
