I am currently working on painting a 5088 IH. The hood is pitted really bad. What is the best way to fix this so that the paint job lasts longer than a couple of years. Thanks in advance. JC

Call around to some automotive paint stores until you find one that can fill their own spray cans. PPG Paint stores often can do this but others may be able to also. Get some self etching primer and go through their paint chip books to find a color of paint that closely matches what you want. While you are there also get a tube of "iceing." This is a more refined type of body putty that is used to fill pits.

Sand off all paint on the metal you are working on and prime. Next use you iceing and fill the pits using a plastic spreader. Thin is better. Wait for it to dry and block sand. Buy a rubber block sander and some 320 wet or dry sand paper. Sand the iceing using plenty of water. Repeat iceing if neccessary. Next Prime 3 or 4 coats. Get some Black primer in a can while you are at the store. Put a very light coat of black over your lighter primer. After it drys wet sand the darker primer off being careful not get into the iceing. You will be able to see dark spots if you have more pits and need more iceing or primer.

Prime again. Make sure ALL bare metal is covered with primer before you paint. Last primer coat should be sanded with 400 wet sandpaper. Paint with automotive grade paint. Not a spray bomb from Walmart!!!! You paint will look great and last for many years.

try high build primer maybe a couple coats and sand in between should fill them.

The pits in my Model C Case were very bad. I used a body filler, lots of sanding, then two part spray putty, lots more sanding then several coats of two pack paint with some sanding in between.

I bought a random orbital sander which made all the difference in the sanding.

The final result was at least as good as new
