hi,

ive got an international 414 whisch has seen better days, after years in the cold damp british climate the paint is dull and lifeless and i want to repaint it. my question is, what sort of level do i need to get it too before it can be painted. does it need to be bare metal or just very well sanded. can you offer me any advice on how to go from a rusty tractor to a shining example of engineering

CNKS pretty much hit it on the head. He probably oversimplified it a little like we in the bussiness usually do. I would strongly suggest you get plenty of help with the varius operations involved either from how-to books or body shops or internet or all the above.LOL

Oversimplified is an understatement -- I have a IH 460 that I have had disassembled for over a year. Just now painting individual parts. I don't call this tractor a project, I call it a journey.

It's up to you. The paint likely has rust under it. I remove all parts and take everything to bare metal, fill all dents, clean the metal throughly, prime everything with epoxy primer, use surfacer on the sheet metal, and topcoat.
