I hope this isn't abusing the tractor forum, but all these brains have got me thinking!!
I have a 20+ year old pole barn with gavanized siding. Only a few are rusty. I am hoping to air-less this summer. The sheen is gone-can I powerwash with TSP and shoot? I'm sure I need to prime/seal the rusty ones. What would someone recommend for this (or do I need to prime the whole thing? When I do get to the fun part.what is the recommended paint for steel siding? I would really like freshen this girl up. Any suggestions and/or sources would be awefully appreciated. Thanks so much Mark

I put up a Galvanized build’in once and wuz told it could not be painted for 5 years then it would need to be etched with vinegar. Best I know you should go at this as if it were bare metal and treat as required to stop the rust and git the paint to stick.

It looks like nobody else is responding, so I"ll take a stab at it. I have experience from 1964, and have done a number of these galvanized metal buildings with good success. Get rid of all dirt, mildew etc. Usually a good power washing with soap is sufficient. I use 4 gpm @3,000psi. Rinse is important as a lot of "crap" washes off with the rinse. I"m in the midwest and have acess to Diamond-Vogel paint. For a flat finish I use the Acrylic MC-1501 Mantenance primer. To go cheap, just double coat. If you want to finish two coats of AcriKote Acrylic (BF-1530).
Permacryl Satin Latex (BS-1530) second coat is a nice white and also comes in a semi-gloss. For a gloss coat go to an alkyd zinc dust primer and an alkyd gloss enamal. $$$
Some of the buildings that I did 25-30 years ago still don"t look too bad.

Thank you for your advise. What about the one or two panels that are all rust? Can power wash and maybe double prime these? -then one coat prime the good stuff?
I'm knd of excited about fixin' the old girl up. Just don't want a "Peel" fest in a couple of years. Thanks again, Mark

I would clean the rusted panels as best you can, probably sand a little and then use one of the rust converters or even the Alkyd zinc dust primer and primer on the rest and then top coat. When I first started, I once painted a grain bin just using house oil primer and oil finish coat. Some has come off, but most is still on. I've had the best results using the latex primer and finish coats. Once you have a primer on, you can use a house coat color if you care to. Preparation and primer is the key to success. We're a little off "label" for this forum, but I'm assuming that you're going to keep your tractor in there?
