Anyone know the name and source of that paint or treatment that turns the manifold a nice gray color when it heats up? I have seen pictures of tractors with manifolds done with that product and like the looks better than that of the black high temp paint.

I am getting ready to send a manifold off to Jet-Hot. They make several diffent coatings. I'm going to have the sterling coat done, (1200 degrees) Looks like chrome. A friend had his hot rod headers done with it and it has held up nicely. 3 year warrenty. They also offer a grey and matt black coating that holds up to 2000 degrees. Check them out on the web. HTH,
Ben

Nothing you can do yourself will last. What you are seeing is ceramic coating. Ship it off to a company that has the equipment to do it. They have the cast iron grey you are looking for.

I have used Eastwood's manifold paint for many years. I had used the stainless steel but now they have one called "factory gray" which looks more like cast iron. They also have a new powdered rub-on manifold coating, but I haven't tried it yet.

Hi,

I used Eastwoods's Factory Gray High Temp Manifold Coating on my AC-B replacement manifold two years ago. I have had decent luck with other Eastwood products so I am not going to blame the paint, however I am quite dissatisfied with my result using it. I thought I followed the instructions as best I could. It was in the winter and I was unable to reinstall the manifold and run the engine for 20 minutes as instructed. Instead, I put the manifold in a woodstove oven for about a half hour or so for final cure, installed on the tractor and didn't run it until a couple of months later. I am going to chaulk that up as my mistake. As you can see in the below before and after pictures, the coating has essentially completely rusted through. The tractor is a working one that is outside all the time. Perhaps that is some of the problem, but I expected much better performance. The rust began showing up about 2 months after it was outside.

Then and now:

If you have any thoughts on what my problem could be, I would be interested.

Rod,
Did you use the brush, or aresol? I don't think the aersol holds up as well unless you put many coats on. I like the brush on. I don't think anything is going to hold up very well on a tractor that sits out in the weather. To quote my IHC operators manuals "to leave a tractor sitting out in the elements will result in materailly shortenging its life". I painted the manifold on my F-12 in 1991. It has always been shedded. I have had to touch it up a little every few years. I painted the manifold on my Regular about the same time. It sat outside for several years and the paint is mostly gone from it. But the eastwood stuff does hold up better than anything else I have used. Plus it looks better than the black or aluminum you buy in aresol cans.

I used the aerosol can. You're right about the thickness and result, aerosol vs. brush-on. I've found that to be true in a different product. Acrylic urethane will hold up outside all the time. Unfortunately, it won't hold up to the heat from an exhaust manufold. I suspect that the ceramic coating that Ex-pro mentions above would be the best solution to my problem.

Hey Rod. The plate on the manifold. Is that supposed to be there? If so, where can I get one for my 48 B?

By the way, you have a wealth of info, thanks.

Tod,

You're welcome. Yes, that plate is supposed to be in that location. It was supplied originally on Bs and Cs. It shows up in the early parts books as part no. 207487, "manifold cover" and in later parts books as part no. 208009, "manifold cover". I don't know what the difference is between the numbers, if any. The original manifolds had a large flat area the size of the plate and 1/4-20 tapped holes that permitted the mounting of it. All new reproduction manifolds do not have such a provision. I had to modify that replacement manifold by adding bosses and tapping holes in order to mount the plate. It's not exactly original but at least the plate is back where it belongs. I've had the plate kicking around in one of my tool boxes for the last 30 or so years and just decided that I wanted to put it back on the manifold.

Here's what the manifold looks like after I added the bosses:

I don't know where you can obtain an original plate. They'd be pretty easy to make though. The text information is engraved in place. Here's a close up of my '42B plate:

A detailed drawing of mine is available here in pdf format if you want to make one or have one made.

I've bought it but haven't used it yet. POR-15's grey manifold paint.
