I am new to painting, but I am in the process of repainting my farmall 400. I am using CNH paint, primer, and thinner, and on the primer instruction it says "topcoat or recoat within 3 hours OR after 48 hours." What exactly does this mean, can I spray primer one day then topcoat the next or do I have to wait 48 hours? Im not sure. Also I am going to strip the tins to bare metal, is this primer ok to use by itself before painting or do I need something else? Does the primer get thinned the same as the paint (8:1) or can it be sprayed without thinning? Sorry so many dumb questions, but im just trying to learn. Thankyou for any tips you can give a newbie.

I used Ih primer before, I primed the chassie then waited about 2 hr's then top coated it with 2150, On your last coat you can reduce the paint about 4:1 it gives it a little more shine but be careful not to run it, I dont recommend IH primer on the tins for a show paint job, but on the chassie its fine

Thanks for the feedback guys, This stuff sure is fun. All of the different paint/primer combinations are a bit confusing, thats why i bought all one brand but if PPG Omni primer would be better I can get some. TDK, thanks for the tip on mixing the 2150, I will try it out.

Another thing !! I realize that the 2150 says mix 8:1, but it won't lay down smooth when mixed at this ratio. 4:1 is much closer to what it should be.

Another reason for buying quality paint -- the instructions are exact.

That's probably true CNKS, but mixture ratio is not that hard to figure out. When it drips from the paint stick correctly you'll know.

I simply do not want to mess with "dripping from the paint stick" -- if you're used to it that's fine, it's the old way and it's not for me. The precision mixing that automotive paint gives me is something that I'm more than willing to pay for. I have never had a problem with it.

I've not had a problem with the precision mixing either. How much easier can it get,,if you can read you can mix it.

It will save you some money if you topcoat with CIH paint, if you don't want to use a higher qualiy paint. Since you are going to bare metal, I would use epoxy on the cast, epoxy plus a sandable primer surfacer on the sheet metal. For example PPG Omni epoxy can be topcoated between 30 minutes and 3 days. After 3 days it has to be scuffed and reapplied. "Most" quality primer surfacers do not have a specific recoat window, but I would not leave them forever, though.

The primer has "recoat window". If you topcoat it between 3 and 48 hrs it will probably lift or wrinkle or other nasty things.
Less than 3 hrs, it can melt into the primer without lifting. after 48 hrs the primer is dry enough that the topcoat won"t penetrate the primer. So either topcoat within 3 hrs or wait till it has dried more than 48 hrs to topcoat.
