We"re building a 25" gooseneck trailer and should finish welding it up today ot tommorow. The I beams we used were painted with some sort of red oxide paint and is in good condition. The rest of the trailer is mostly new steel and has some surface rust on parts of it. I can sandblast the whole trailer and then paint it, but it takes time and makes a mess. I was thinking on useing some Picklex but that isn"t going to be cheap either on a big trailer. Any suggestions? I had planned on using epoxy primer with a two part urathane top coat, so it would be nice to do a good job with the prep work to make the paint job last.

Thanks, Greg

DuPont Industrial Coatings hs a Corlar product called 25P part #63725p with activator #vf525.

It is a 1:1 mix giving you 2 sprayable gallons for under $100. It is an epoxy mastic giving you awesome strength and durability. It is used on the oil rigs in the Gulf due to how corrosion resistant it is. I have several tractor resto guys using this product now and it works great.

Hi Greg,

If you want the very best, I'll agree with B-maniac, with a caution on the 7 days. The time window for epoxy varies with the product. PPG's premium DPLF is, in fact 7 days. PPG's Omni MP170 is 3 days and I think DuPont's epoxy is 24 hours. So check your product sheets for topcoat windows to avoid scuffing and possibly re-application of the epoxy.

Actually I think you will find the Picklex goes a long way. If you want to settle for something a little less than the very best, but still very good, I'd scuff the oxide primer (providing it's sound), spot sandblast the welded joints, Picklex the surface rust (assuming it's light), apply two coats of epoxy and topcoat with your choice within the appropriate time window.

Blast it , if it is new steel it probably has that dark or somewhat blueish mill coating and probably lots of mill scale also. Blast, shoot with 2 coats epoxy, then just get on it within the next 7 days with top coats, preferably a good brand of true polyurethane.
